First-Drafting

At this point, just sit down and start pounding out the real first draft of the story. This will go shockingly fast, if my sources are anything to go by. It's fun because you already know that the large-scale structure of the story works, so you only have to solve a limited set of problems, and you can write relatively fast. There is no reason to spend 500 hours writing a wandering first draft when you can write a solid one in 70 (unlike everyone else. And, by the way, unlike all the others this one will actually have a plot). Counting the 15-20 hours it takes to do the design documents, you come out criminally early. About midway through the first draft, take a break and fix all the mistakes of the design documents. Correct—they’re completely wrong. If you are doing this right, at the end of the first draft you will laugh at how amateurish they were.
