I have never known my parents so I guess the idea of celebrating Mother's Day is kinda stupid. I mean yes I have a foster mom, Kendra, but it's not the same. I guess it also has something to do with the fact that Kendra takes care of seven other kids so she doesn't really worry about the older ones.

By older ones I mean Sara and I. Sara is fifteen and while you can argue that fifteen is not that old I guess to someone that has to take care of six other kids who are all younger than you from the age of thirteen you are mature enough to take care of yourself.

Well tomorrow is my eighteenth birthday and that means that Kendra is no longer required to take care of me. So from tomorrow it's me against the world.
But I guess that's the way it's always been.

Tomorrow I will pack up the few belongings I have which consists of; four t-shirts, two pairs of leggings, shorts, converse,a toothbrush and a locket that used to belong to my mother.

When my mother died I was put into foster care because my father didn't want me. But before putting me into the system the bastard felt bad and gave me the necklace.

At least that's what I was told.

Inside the locket is a picture of my mother or a least the person I have believed is my mother for years.

In the picture she is in the garden. Her beautiful red hair blowing in the wind. I inherited a lot of her features like her red hair, fair skin and freckles. But where she has beautiful blue eyes I have green ones.

I guess I inherited that from my father.

I suppose I'll never know because I will never meet him. I have no interest in pushing myself onto people who clearly don't want me.

Tonight will be my farewell dinner where I will have my last meal with all these people.

I get a pretty dress from Kendra. Nothing expensive or fancy but I have never owned a dress so it will be fun to wear.

I have yet to see the dress as it is a surprise that I get to see once Kendra is home.

I'm currently sitting in the room I share with Sara and Bonnie.

Bonnie is eleven. She was taken in by Kendra five years ago after her father was arrested and her mother couldn't afford her. She is beautiful with her dark skin and dark hair. She can probably make it as a model when she's older.

Sara on the other hand will probably own a big company and get married. She is so smart and is also very beautiful. I think it was definitely difficult for her as she came here when she was eleven. I'm not really sure how Sara ended up here.

"Are you ready for tomorrow? Have you packed your stuff?" Asks Sara.

Even though Sara has only been here four years she and I have become really close and will probably be the hardest to leave.

"No but I will soon. " I respond trying to sound calm.

"Lets pack it now and make sure you have everything." She says jumping up and moving towards the backpack in the corner.

After packing up my stuff-which only took five minutes- Kendra walks in.

She is carrying a white box tied with a bow.

I obviously know what it is. It's my dress for tonight.

She hands me the box smiling. As soon as I take it from her I almost rip the box trying to open it.

Inside is a beautiful green, almost turquoise dress. It appears to be knee length but then again I am really short so it might be longer.

"Its beautiful! Thank you Kendra." I say smiling.

"My pleasure. Now get changed dinner is in fifteen minutes." she replies in her turn mother voice. She hasn't used that voice with me in three years. I guess it has something to do with the fact that she hadn't said more than five words every time she spoke to me.

I slip on the dress. Since I am an A cup I Kendra thought it would be a waste of money to buy me bras so I have never owned a bra.

I put on my converse since they are the only shoes I own. My red hair is in a ponytail.

I walk out of the room and towards our dining area.  The dining area is nothing special. It is a long wooden table with ten chairs.

I pull up the chair in between Sara and Bonnie. Everyone always sits in the same seat.

Tyler, a six year old boy, sits across from us. Next to him is Austin ,a seven year old boy. Next to him is Tommy, a ten year old boy.The last person is little Susie a four year girl, who is sitting nest to Sara.At the head of the table is Kendra.

For dinner we are having my favourite: Mac and Cheese.

Everyone gets equal amounts of food and half a glass of soda. All the younger ones are excited because we never get soda.

Sara smiles at me. There are tears in her eyes. I never thought how Sara would feel after I left.

I smile at her sadly. I am really gonna miss this place.

"Anna since you are the guest of honour can you please say grace?" Kendra ask smiling.

I nod," Lord we thank you for the gifts we are about to receive and we thank you that we have a roof over our heads and food to eat. Amen."

"Amen." everyone says in unison.

We all silently eat our meal and then we get up to do our chores. Since my chore is doing the dishes I collect the dishes from the table.

After I have finished washing the dishes I go to the room. Sara is sitting on her bed in her night gown. I strip out of the dress and put on pyjama shorts and one of my four t-shirts.

"Anna can I please sleep with you?" asks Sara and I smile.

When Sara was younger she was afraid of the dark so for a whole year she slept with me in my bed. We move away the bedside table and push Sara's bed against mine.

"Do you have to go Anna?"

"You know I do." I reply sadly.

"Can I come with you?" she asks sadly. I begin running my hands through her hair.

"I wish you could Sara but you need to finish school and besides if you come with me who is going to take care of Bonnie?"

"Ok but will I still get to see you?"

"Yes. Every year on your birthday I will meet you at two o'clock by that bookstore you love." I tell her. "Now go to bed"

"Goodnight Bonnie, Night Anna."

"Goodnight." I say before dosing off.

The next morning I put on my white shirt and faded blue jeans. I am standing by the door my backpack on my back.

Kendra hands me an envelope that has one hundred dollars in it. It's my start.

All the children line up to hug me. Sara is right at the back.

I hug everyone of the kids and then I get to Sara. She runs into my arms, tears streaming down her face.

"Ssh don't cry." I say holding back my tears.

She hugs me for a few minutes longer before Kendra comes and peels her off me.

"No! NO! Please Anna don't leave?" She pleads.

One stray tear rolls down my cheek as I mumble goodbye and close the door behind me.
