After leaving the house I wasn't quite sure where I was going. My top priority is finding a job. So I take a train to town where I should find a job.

Upon leaving the train I realised that today is the first day of winter. All the stores are decorated for christmas. Christmas isn't for another three weeks but the stores have been decorated since the first of November. I love Christmas and even though we never really celebrated with Kendra I always loved it. I have never received a Christmas gift and I also have never had a white christmas.

I walk on the pathway and I predict that by the end of the week it will be covered with snow. I walk up to the supermarket and taking a deep breath, I walk inside. Like the others it is decorated perfectly for Christmas. It has no shortage of people and all the workers are dressed in red and green.

I walk up to one of the workers.

"Hi. I'm looking for a job so who should I talk to." I ask smiling. The worker couldn't look more uninterested in what I was asking.

"We are not hiring." she responded chewing her gum.

"Are you sure because I will work very hard I promise just give me a chance." I rush out. This is not a good start.

"Like I said Miss we aren't hiring." she said and turned around walking away.

That did not go the way I hoped. I won't be discouraged there are still a lot more stores.

But sadly that positive attitude didn't last. You just start to get discouraged after you go from store to store getting rejected.

The sad thing is most of the owners didn't even give me a chance. They all said things like:

"You are too young." and "We're not hiring."

I had known it would not be easy but after going around to about thirty places and being rejected every time I was ready to give up. So I walk up to the last store on the street.

It was a cute little cafe. I walk inside and see a very bored looking cashier. The cafe is rarely empty except for tree guys sitting at different tables. Taking a deep breath, I smile and walk up to her.

"Can I help you?" she says not even looking up from her magazine.

"Yes I am looking for a job." I say still smiling. Please oh please just give me a job.

"I don't think we are hiring." she says still not looking up.

"Please I am begging you. You are my last hope. I promise I'll work hard." I know it's pathetic but but I am desperate.

She rolls her eyes at my plea,"I'm sorry but my boss isn't here so I cannot tell you if we are hiring."

I walk towards the door feeling defeated. Before I reach the door someone grabs my arm and violently turns me around. In front of me is a man with dark eyes and a unshaved beard. He looks about forty.

"You want a job ey? I have a few things you can do." he says smiling wickedly. I try to pull my arm away but his grip just tightens.

"Let go." I say trying to break free of his grip.

"I though you wanted money?" he says with the same wicked grin on his face. Tears fill my eyes.

"Please just let go." I say trying to beg him.

He turns around as someone taps his shoulder. I follow the hand up to a body that is towering over the man in front of me. The man has black hair and the palest blue eyes I have ever seen. He is glaring down at the man.

"I believe the lady told you to let her go." he says. His voice is so deep and beautiful. The kind of voice that would narrate a movie.

The man automatically lets go of my arm.

"No go and never come back to this cafe." he says to the man and he runs out of the cafe.

I am confused. The man does look scary but I don't understand how he could have got that kind of reaction.

"Thank you." I say to the man.

He still has a cold expression on his face.

"Walk with me." Is his reply. It's not a question but a command. He begins walking out the cafe and I follow silently.

We walk silently down the street.

"Where do you stay?" he asks.

Too scared not to reply I say, "I don't have a place to stay. I was probably going to go to a motel or something."

"How old are you?"

I feel like I am in an interrogation.

"I'm eighteen." I reply.

"Don't you have to go to school?"

I used to go to school but stopped about five months ago because I made a deal with Kendra. The deal was that if I stop going she will let Sara finish school even after her birthday.

"No."

"So you don't have a home and you don't go to school? Are you a runaway?" he asks his expression never changing.

"No I'm not a runaway." I reply.

I don't know why he wants to know all this stuff.

Maybe he wants to kill me.

"Then where are your parents?" He asks and I stop dead in my tracks.

"You know I don't have to answer your questions because I have no ideas who you are. Thanks for getting that guy to back off but I really should be going now." I say but before I can leave he grabs my arm.

"Ok you're right but you don't have anywhere to go and I have a proposition for you. " he says starring at me.

"What is your proposition?" I ask curious.

"You need a place to stay, so why don't you stay with me. " he says and my mouth drops open.

"But I don't even know you?" I say trying to hide my shocked expression. "And besides I don't want your charity."

"Oh it's not charity because you'll have to do something for me."

"And what is that?" I ask.

"You'll have to be my girlfriend."

My jaw is back on the floor.

"Your girlfriend?" I ask.

"Not a real one. You see my mother is coming to town and she believes that I should have a girlfriend. I don't want a girlfriend but in order to keep her from setting me up with someone I need a fake girlfriend. " he explains as if it's the most natural thing in the world.

"For how long?" I ask. I cannot believe I'm actually considering this.

"The whole winter." He replies. "So do we have a deal?"

I sigh."I guess we have a deal."
