"Candor

Truth makes us transparent
Truth makes us strong
Truth makes us in extricable."

That sign is what my family looks up too. That sign makes us a family. That little 15x15 sign in our house makes us strong.

Truth. The one thing I look up too.

Truth.

I woke up this morning scared, nervous, sick to the stomach. The Aptitude test. The one day I hate the most.

Cathleen. That's my name my mom gave me, and I have hated it ever since.

Rebecca. My sister. My 5 month older sister.

Rebecca. Her hair, blonde hair that reaches her collarbone. Her hazel eyes complement her height of 5.10. She is such an extrovert it is not even funny.

Me. Well I have the darkest brown hair you will ever see. It is pretty long, at least longer than Rebecca's. I have crystal blue eyes with a short height of 5.3. I don't talk much, I guess more of an introvert if you ask me.

I put on a white short sleeve shirt with a black skirt. Candor only allows us to wear black and white, I know, it's stupid. I look downstairs and see my sister. She was wearing the same top I am wearing and long pants.

I go downstairs and I see my mom, her name is Ellen if you are wondering.

"Hey Cathleen, you look worried, are you okay?"

"We have Aptitude tests today," I say quietly.

"I totally forgot about that. Remember the test doesn't choose your faction, it chooses what they think you are. The test doesn't have to mean anything," she says making sure I wasn't nervous even though I am.

"Mom! Cathleen and I are going to start walking," says Rebecca.

I roll my eyes.

"Okay, here are your backpacks."

My mom hands me my white backpack while she hands Rebecca her black one. Like our clothes, it has to be all black or all white, no patterns, nothing.

We both walk out the door and start heading to our school. We basically have half a day at school because Aptitude tests are after lunch. The whole school has lunch at the same time but we switch for classes. Only people from your faction are allowed to be in your class. I head in the school doors and say goodbye to Rebecca.

"See ya at Aptitude tests," she says.

"Yeah, see you soon."

Rebecca and I don't have any classes together despite we are in the same faction, it just ended out that way. I started heading to faction history and so on.

When it was lunch time, I ate my food and when I heard the bell, I went down the long hallway to where we have to go through the door that leads to the test. I go out the doors and go to the end of the line by other Candor girls and boys.

The outside feels cool. It's warm out today, but slightly windy. I feel the wind against my face.

Then I saw my friend Emily or Em is what I like to call her. Her and around 5 other people from Candor were playing a hand slapping game with a rhyming song to go along with it. I remember we use to play this game back when we were little. My friends Jessica and Karen was with her.

"Hey Cathleen, want to play," asks Emily.

"Sure, do we got a new girl," I ask pointing to a girl I didn't know. She is the same height as me with chocolate brown hair and green eyes.

"This is Katie," Jessica tells me.

"Hey," she says. "So your Cathleen?"

"Yeah, nice to meet you."

"Yeah, you too."

I like this girl. She seems nice and quiet like me. I saw her in the halls sometimes.

"You're going to have to wait until next game," Karen says. "We already started a game."

To waste time, I took a look at all the other factions. Erudite, they value intelligence, was laughing but doing these weird hands signs like they were arguing.

Amity, the peaceful, was talking and were really loud. I mean we were kinda loud with the rhyming song but light years quieter than them.

Dauntless, they value bravery, are just hoping off the train, running, and are daring each other to do different stuff like jump over people and other things I don't understand. I am not a Dauntless, I am super quiet and not even close to jumping off a moving train. If you didn't know, Dauntless gets to ride a train to school and other places but they have to jump in and out of the train. I would never in a million years do that.

I take a look over at Abnegation. They are all just standing there quietly. Then, I see a girl fall down and she said something I couldn't hear to the boy that tripped her.

"Get out of my way Stiff," is what he says in response. That's what people sometimes call Abnegations. I was so close to going and helping her but then I heard Karen say my name.

"Cathleen, let's play."

After a while, the students in the testing room came out, all looking pale. I see my sister come out, I wanted to ask her what she got but that would be against the rules. You can't tell anyone your results of the test. You also can't study for the test so I am clueless.

From Candor: Katie Swain and Cathleen Reese.

I start heading to a testing room and wait outside the door until all the names are called.

From Abnegation: Susan Black and Beatrice Prior.

I see the girl that got tripped and she starred at me for a second and then looked away. I went in testing room 4 and was greeted by an Erudite girl. I look around the room and see a huge mirror. I look at myself and look back at the girl. We are not allowed to have the our person be in the same faction as us.

"I am Grace and will be your tester for today," the girl says.

"Hi."

"What's your name," she asked putting little sticker like things on my head.

"Cathleen, Cathleen Reese," I say.

"Great! Wait a second," she says stirring a blue liquid. "Drink this."

"What is it?"

"You will see."

I try and smell it but I don't smell anything. Maybe it was just water? I took a big sip of it. It tastes like cherry medicine. I feel my eyes close into darkness.
