Making her way to what she learned to be called a highway, with the speeding machines, the Humans called cars she made her way across and headed to where she knew Jax would be found. Over time, it crossed her mind he might find it strange with so many nights between their visits. He never mentioned it, and seemed happy she showed up on the occasions she did. Tonight would be different, there would be nothing happy about this visit. How did she tell the man she knew in her heart she loved, there would be no more nights together? Working out an explanation the tricky part. With no other way but the truth, she had to trust him enough to not destroy the entire Fae community.
The thick smell of exhaust tainted the air, and while she didn't like it, a foul odor to which she had become accustomed. Taking it for what it was — a part of this world. Walking along the same street every time, she still had not seen much of the city. In fact, if it wasn't in the small block, it was completely foreign to her. The thought occurred to her that she didn't know how or where humans slept or lived, where they ate, other than the couple places Jax had taken her. Human food, for lack of a better word, she could only describe as interesting. She refused to eat what they called meat, the flesh of another being, but their vegetables and fruit were far different than what she was accustomed. Now, she would never experience anything else Human related.
The cold metal of the door handle was under her hand as she tugged on the door to the gym where she would find him. Taking a deep breath, she sighed, she not only broke the Fae code by entering the Human realm, but she also violated everything when she fell in love with a Human man. Unsure of his feelings on the subject, she never voiced her own thoughts. He would hold her hand and stroke her hair, but they never discussed the topic. Raising her eyes to meet his, she felt the familiar shiver of excitement as it shot through her watching his chocolate brown eyes fill with a light and his mouth widened in a smile.
"Ambrosine!"
"Jax, hello," she said, barely able to contain the tears. The fountains forming behind her eyelids threatened to burst forth without notice.
"Give me one minute, and I'll be done."
"Take your time," she said, not wanting to rush the inevitable.
His co-worker appeared from around the corner and smiled at her.
"Hey, Jax, go on man. I'll finish this up. Get out of here," the other man offered.
"You sure?"
"Yeah, not a big deal. You'll get me back, I'm sure."
Throwing the towel into a box of dirty laundry, Jax disappeared, returning a few moments later. Not staring proved to be easier said than done. His form was exquisite. Rippling muscles in his shoulders and arms showed in the sleeveless T-shirt he wore and his well-defined legs under his shorts. She wanted nothing more than to wrap her arms around him and never let go, yet there she stood, waiting to tell him there would be no more meetings, no more time spent together, no more them at all. In her heart, she knew she would drag the night out as long as possible, she didn't want to leave him.
"Let's get out of here," he suggested.
"Of course."
Walking along the cracked and broken sidewalk, grass growing through the long lines zig-zagging over the surface, he took my hand in his. Her hand so small inside of his, it made her feel safe. Yes, that seemed like the right word, safe. They walked in silence for a short time.
"What do you want to do tonight, Ambrosine?" he asked.
"There's someplace I want to take you, but you have to promise me no matter what, you won't get freaked out and leave. I've wanted to tell you for a long time now, but I think it would be better to show you and then explain," she said to him.
