The moment she woke up, Olive already had a smile on her face. This was her first full day in the loop, and she was excited to start it.
She looked around her new room that she liked very much. It was simple, with only a bed, dresser, a mirror and a couch, yet it felt comfortable and homey.
She changed out of her pajamas and into a dress. Then she wore her rubber gloves for safekeeping.
She went out of the room, and by the hallway she saw Enoch already dressed for the day, though his hair was still in tangles.
"Good morning!" Olive greeted happily.
"Morning," Enoch greeted back with less enthusiasm as he yawned and rubbed his eyes.
"Got a good sleep?" Enoch asked.
Olive smiled. "Yeah, my new bed's really comfortable. I just hope I don't burn it soon..."
"Burn it? Can't you control your fire?" Enoch asked.
Olive shook her head. "That's why I have to wear these." She raised her hands to showcase her rubber gloves.
She was five when her peculiarity showed. She had burnt her bed and ever since then, she always had to wear her gloves.
They both went to breakfast where almost everyone was almost seated. Olive received greetings as she sat on her seat the previous night.
"Good morning, Olive," Emma greeted her.
"Good morning to you too, Emma," Olive replied.
She exchanged a couple of greetings with the others while they waited for some people who weren't in the dining room yet. Soon everyone ended up in their own conversations. When they were complete, they started to eat their breakfast.
"Yesterday the moon seemed bigger than it usually is," Millard said randomly.
"What does that have to do with anything?" Enoch asked.
"Maybe it's a sign that something's changing," Victor suggested. "I wonder if they'll gey to explore the moon in the future."
Just then, a loud thump came from the other rend of the table. Miss Peregrine had slammed her fork on the table.
"Victor, we don't talk about the future here in the loop," she reminded with authority.
The rest of the meal went quiet.
After breakfast it was time for their morning walk. They left the house and strolled around Cairnholm.
Miss Peregrine was up front, greeting other residents who they passed by. Fiona, Horace, Bronwyn and Hugh followed behind her. Millard stayed with the twins and held their hands. Olive walked with Claire, Enoch, and Victor. Then last was Emma and Abe.
Olive took in the place around her. Cairnholm was a small island, yet it was filled with different kinds of birds. Tall weeds and shrubs grew in various places, and there was only a dirt road for everyone to walk on.
"How long have you guys been here?" Olive asked.
"About a hundred and eighteen years," Enoch said.
"A hundred and eighteen?" Olive repeated in surprise.
"Quite some time, huh?" Victor said. "Sometimes I wish I could leave the loop."
"But you'll die if you do!" Claire stated.
"Yeah, I know," Victor said glumly.
Just then, they heard laughs from behind them, and the four of them turned and saw that it came from Emma and Abe, who were talking with smiles on their faces. Enoch grunted and turned away.
They were now nearing the house again. They walked along a cliff beside the rocky shore.
"Hey, are you still going to make that beheaded doll with spider legs fight that ripped teddy bear?" Victor asked Enoch.
"Yeah," Enoch replied. Then he turned to Olive. "Wanna come with?"
Olive was surprised she even got invited. Just last night, he didn't seem to want to show her his peculiarity. But now, he was the one offering her.
"Sure," she said and smiled.
Hours later, Olive and Victor were up with Enoch in his room, helping him with his dolls.
"Pass the scalpel," Enoch ordered, and Victor handed it to him.
Before Olive came in the loop, Victor was always the one who helped Enoch with his dolls. He recognized Enoch's tools with ease and was familiar with the way he brought inanimate objects to life. Olive helped a little, but she mostly just watched since she didn't know much about what to do.
Suddenly, a knock was on a door and Enoch shouted for the person to come in. Emma peeked in the room.
"C'mon, guys. It's time for dinner," she said.
"Okay." Enoch started to clean his table, and Olive noticed that he was a bit red in the face.
Once Emma left the room, Victor smiled. "Look who's blushing."
"Wha- I'm not blushing!" Enoch retorted, blushing even harder.
"Yeah and water isn't wet."
Olive giggled as they both started to bicker, and eventually their argument died down and they all went down to dinner.
"So, you fancy Emma, huh?" Olive said to Enoch.
"No," Enoch stated. "No I don't."
"It seems pretty clear to me that you're lying," Victor said.
"I said I don't like her!" Enoch said with his voice raised. "Besides, she's got Abe."
His voice seemed so sad that Olive had the urge to hug him, but of course she didn't do it.
"Well, you have me," Olive said. Enoch stared at her.
"And Victor," she quickly added.
"She's right. You've got us. We'll always be your friends," Victor said.
"Thanks." Enoch gave a small smile.
