'Emily, are you ready? Daniel is almost here,' my mother called from downstairs. 'Almost!' I yelled back. It was fall. The 31st of October. Halloween. I didn't really like Halloween. I hated scary things. All that costumes and pumpkins... In our village nobody was really excited about Halloween, but this year it seemed like they did. There were children going along the doors. They said: 'Trick or treat!' Normally my family didn't pay very much attention to Halloween. This year wasn't an exception. I was going on holiday to Ireland with my mother and my half-brother Daniel. He is only one year older than me. 15 years ago I was born. After my mother gave birth to me, my father left. I asked my mother several times why he left, but she didn't want to answer. She only said she was furious with him. She never spoke to him again. Before my father came in my mother's life, she had a relation with another man. She gave birth to Daniel, one year before me. I see him as my big brother. I didn't actually look like Daniel. We only have the same eye colour. I have straight brown hair, grey eyes and a tip-tilted nose. Daniel has black hair and the same grey eyes as me.
Downstairs I heard the bell ring. That had to be Daniel. I opened the door. There was a vampire standing in front of me. I screamed and slammed the door closed. 'What's wrong?' My mother came running out of the kitchen. 'Th-there is a v-vampire standing outside!' 'Emily, it's Halloween! There are children going along the doors.' 'Oh yeah, I forgot! I really hate that costumes.' I opened the door again. The vampire was gone. I almost closed the door when I heard someone yelling my name. 'Hey, Emily!' I saw Daniel walking through the street. 'Hey, where did you stay? The bus is almost leaving!' My mother asked. 'I'm sorry, I had to arrange something for the boat.' Daniel said. 'Emily, grab your bags, we are leaving in three minutes.' My mother said. I walked upstairs to grab my bags. When I came downstairs again, my mother and Daniel were standing in the hall, waiting for me. I was exited to go to Ireland. I never went there before. I also never went by boat.
In the bus Daniel looked a bit worried. 'Is there something wrong Daniel?' I asked. 'No, why?' He answered. 'Oh, you look a bit concerned. What did you actually had to arrange for the boat?' 'That's none of your business.' He said a bit angrily. I didn't say anything back. There was something wrong with him, and I was going to find out what.
After one hour in the bus, we were in the harbour. We grabbed our bags. There were a lot of boats, but I didn't saw the boat my mother showed me on a picture. 'Where is our boat?' I asked to no one in particular. 'It's a bit further away,' Daniel said. 'We have to walk for ten minutes.' I sighed. My two bags were very heavy. I was glad when I saw the point of a boat far away. It was very foggy, so I couldn't see the whole boat. Then we finally arrived by the boat. It looked spooky in the fog. Daniel was the first who walked on the shelf to go onto the boat. 'Come!' He yelled. My mother walked after Daniel. Why did Daniel hired this boat? It was too creepy! I took a deep breath and walked after my half-brother and my mother.
On the boat it was even scarier than from outside. There were ravens sitting on the rail. They stared at me with empty eyes. Daniel and my mother were already inside. I walked inside fast. Inside there were jack-O'-lantarns standing on a table. There was candy in a bowl, but it didn't look very nice. it were eyeballs, little yelly brains and spiders from sugar. There were holes in the curtains that were hanging in front of the window. I opened them. In the windowsill there were lying dead flies. 'Ew,' I said and I closed the curtains again. The real boat was so different than the one on the picture. 'Emily, this is your cabin,' Daniel called from somewhere in the boat. I walked towards the place where his voice came from. Daniel and my mother were standing in a small cabin with a bed, a table and a shower. 'Oh, nice,' I said sarcastic.
'Emily, can I speak to you for a second?' My mom asked. She pushed me out of the cabin. 'Daniel arranged this holiday for us, so please be nice to him.' 'I am nice to him mom, but I don't understand why he hired this creepy boat. He knows that I don't like scary things.' 'Emily, I don't like it too but you can't say that to him,' My mother whispered. 'Okay, I'll be nice,' I sighed.
