I watched warily as the waves drew in and out, pounding at the beach. Slowly throwing theselves at the sand. Ending their miserable lives. Being painstakingly difficult beyond any reasoning.
Constantly bending to the will of others, the waves reminded me of myself. Changing, morphing into a punchbag for everyone to walk all over. Voices crawled up behind me. Loud and echoing. From the comfortable warm tangles of my fluffy blanket, I turned my head slowly, careful not to jerk it too far forward and damage the tendon I had very nearly snapped last week.
The boy was there, looking at the other three humans with pleading eyes. When they dismissed him he strode toward me, smiling gently, the warmth spreading inside my heart. No-one smiled at me. Even I didn't think I was worthy of a smile.
"Hey, you feeling alright?" His voice came out smooth and caring. A strong arm wound up around my weak shoulders, he cradled me to his chest and murmured into my hair. "What's your name wee one?
"Cl-Claire." I tried to sound cool and confident but inside I was having a major melt down. "Whats yours?" This was the first proper conversation we had and I was fiddling nervously with my fingers, letting grains of sand slip through them.
"Brian." He whispered unwilling to break the sanctuary of silence that enfolded us.
Now I was free of Brad, for I wish not to call him uncle, I had my life to build up, repair and replace the ones that I thought I loved. The strong willed seven-year-old in me was still shawdowed under the shy and helpless facade I wore. Deep down, in the core of my being I could still feel the inferno building, a spark that was well concealed amount lies and fake personas.
If I wanted to have a chance surviving in the harsh tropics, i would need companions. The rushing of water against my toes brought my tickled senses back to the paradise reality was. I must have fallen asleep in Brian's arms. He was out cold and snoring slightly, which made me stifle a giggle.
Tufts of his lengthy hair flopped into his face causing me to reach out and push it to the side. His skull was heavy and boulder-y, which meant his head rolled straight into my palm as the slightest push was pressed up against his temple. I lowered my hand to my lap and let his head be slowly carried down by gravity.
Finally after practically minutes of heavy lifting my arm was starting to cramp up because of the uncomfortable position it found itself in. I poked Brian's shoulder in a feeble attempt to wake him up, but instead of waking up he started muttering under his breath.
"Get away from me... You can't banish me! You ... You... You promised father."
A strange silence filled the air between us as he took a deep breath then continued.
"Please. I'm begging on my knees..." a harsh laugh echoed around, then came the hearing I was somehow so used to. "Don't kill her? It wasn't me... it was the fire. Please C, let me kiss you."
I stood up quickly, alarmed at what he had just narrated during his heavy slumber. I completely forgot his head was resting on my leg and as i stood up, his skull crashed onto the sand, causing a mini-eruption to go off and explode into his uncombed and suddenly very oily hair.
I felt grungy and sweaty. The things he had said were swirling in the back of my mind. Questions humming like swarms of bees infecting my brain with the loud monotonous hum that drove me to the brink of insanity.
I didn't know what to do, the mere thought of encountering the sleeping giant scared me, 'best find the others, the chance of survival is greater there. With them.'
I heard him groan out in pain and decided it was time.
RUN.
I don't know how far I had managed to sprint to, but now i was on yhe top of a steep and sandy slope. Overlooking the beach and ocean before me. Brian was no longer residing on the sand, which made me wonder where the creep could flee to.
"Why's you leave me on the sand Claire?" He was pouting and looked so damn adorable.
I didn't want him to know that I heard his exchange with his dream-like consience. So I talked myself around it.
"It was a race silly." I giggled pathetically and tried to act sultry for him to forget the question. My head was still spinning with the questions and the state of dizziness I was in did not help strengthen my facade. I was toppling over everywhere and everything went blurry. I was spinning out of control now. Left foot on the ground, from my not allowing it to move, but I began pivoting now with the right foot leading me in awkward circles. Two hands steadied myself by holding onto my shoulders to try and stablise my retarded movement.
"Hey princess. Don't you worry, I'm here now. Alright?"
His voice was so close to my ear and what he had murmered was life bliss. My ears focused only on his words and nothing else around us.
He repeated himself quietly. "It alright princess. I've got you."
The mass of butterflies in my stomach erupted and spun themselves into a giant frenzy. I leaned backwards into his awaiting chest and cushioned myself into his abs. I felt him get a hold of my waist-length blonde hair and stroke it cautiously. Almost caringly.
How could I have doubted him?
___________
