city lights 🌃: Andy kongWhere'd they lead you now ?
I turn around to see you
But the color of the city lights
Make everything so hazy
I'm trying to believe you
But it hearts to hear you say
That the city has changed usThe couple now broken up , had forgot about much of there childhood memories they shared , after moving to New York together. The two had known each other since birth , they'd grown up and eventually the two had stronger feelings for each other. The realization wasn't until junior year when he stepped out and asked her to junior prom . Her answer yes of course and they stayed together throughout 3 of her college years until they broke up. The tragic breakup lingered on into both of their daily lives long after .
Remember the nights we'd lie right out on the pavement?
Staring up as we watched the stars dance across the evening sky.
And why'd we move away from the quiet country ?
Trading rubber and rust for rubble and dust
Are we fading away underneath the city lights ?
Are we fading away underneath the city ?The two grew up together spending many of there summer nights and memories together . From swimming to tire swings to exploring the lake behind the houses . They lived in North Carolina , they were undoubtedly rich southners. Their families taking beach vacation renting out villas for weeks together every summer . It wasn't a tradition they skipped even during college . They had shared their first kiss at the age of 15 , she didn't want her first kiss to be an onstage kiss. She was a sucker when it came to acting , she was a theatre nerd . He came to every play bringing her flowers afterward before they went back to her house for ice cream sandwiches . They had quite the tradition , they were best friends . They moved to New York so she could go to Juillard of course to pursue career. He got homesick more than she ever would of course , going from the small town to the big city with their lives ahead of the, was different even for her. She loved the rush , the feel of the big city , being small in the city brought comfort to her small heart .
And how did it come to this?
We left a happy home for this
Where the roof and the walls of that old house
We're pieces of us , but now
The night sky burns street light to street light .
From your eyes run tears of a past life
In a pool memories on the floorThey moved into a small apartment together not far from Juilliard and he went to a NYU and that's when everything started to fall apart. She didn't know what it was but they could never agree on the same thing anymore . She traveled across the world sometimes flying from there to Paris and she's be gone for weeks and then come back acting like everything is okay . He wouldn't explain how he felt how it impacted him,he was reserved but God he loved her . He always did every since they shared there first kiss . He knew there was something special about her The fights became unresolved .
The two tried everything to make the relationship work except they were never trying at the same time and sometimes to hard. He spent many nights lying awake on the couch , and vise versa. We were just kids living in a small town growing to quick
And our hearts set on leaving
We left home running with our hands clasped tight and somewhere along the line we lost sight and now we're two strangers running lost in a big town
The bright lights inspire you when the sun goes down
Where'd they lead you now?
Where'd they lead you now ?It lead them in different directions , he moved out and got a job , crashing in a hotel night after night going to club after club until he decided to get his life together . He became a real estate broker , working constantly to and fro. He moved to the upper east side in a nice penthouse . He got a puppy , he hadn't been with anyone since . He wanted her , he had nostalgic feelings toward her. And every memory came crashing down on his brain late at night , so he played with his puppy bailey , who was saving him from depression. She moved on quiet easily , she felt off about everything. Her voting wasn't the same , even her dancing was off now , she was engaged to a guy. Austin was his name , she loves him she did , but she didn't love him like she loved Toby , they were getting married in about 6 months. She was at his doorstep now , pacing back in forth , she got his address a while after they broke up . They tried to maintain the friendship , but she stated it wasn't meant to be and broke off the friendship in a card through the mail . She was anxious , her sister Amanda , had been injured . She thought he should know , after all , that's who Amanda wanted to see , was them . The two broke up only informing their parents , but in little detail leaving the rest of the small town they grew up In , with hopes the two would be getting married . It started to rain and she pressed her hand to the doorbell , when she heard something behind her . It was bailey and Toby , his eyes squinted to make sure he was seeing correctly , "spen-Spencer ?" Her named rolled off his lips .
"Toby -I- I - there's been an accident?" She finally got the words out of her mouth but there were to many thoughts running through her brain for her to process.
"Come in ? Is everything okay ?" He asked and bailey scampered around and he picked her up petting her and he took off Spencer's coat , getting her tea .
"Yeah -its its Amanda?" Her voice shook
The apartment got quiet and he couldn't bring his mind to ask what happened .
Amanda was her younger sister , Amanda was the one Toby babysat when Spencer was sick or when she was doing anything . He would always be there he was like her big brother , she encouraged him to ask Spencer out . She was the reason the two had gone to junior prom together leading on to many other memories of course .
"Is -is she okay ?" He asked her , he brought the tea over his hand was shaky ."She got ran over , walking across the highway , as a suicide attempt ." Her voice was so light and he almost dropped the cup but he carefully placed it in her hand . His hand went to the small of her back and he kissed her head , and he noticed the ring .
"She's going be okay , I just thought if you wanted to come I'm , I'm going to see her , tomorrow ?" She said and he nodded without doubt . She noticed the place was nice and she noticed how simple it was . She pulled out an envelope from her coat , her wedding invitation.
"I - I wanted to give you this ." She handed it to him .
He was confused but opened it he gave a small smile but he blinked back the tears " of course I'll be there , I wouldn't miss it for anything else ." His voice was achy almost like he was about to cry . He felt like something was stuck in his throat ."I'm happy for you I am ." He stated as he took a sip of tea he made himself.
"You shouldn't- you shouldn't I broke your heart , I left you , and now I'm asking you to come to my wedding . I'm asking you to sit and watch me marry some other guy and you'll wonder what went wrong ? What you could've done for it to been you up there . I know you , and this isn't fair of me . But you'll still come , you'll bring a present , you'll come alone . You'll make small talk , you tell him to take care of me , just like you told all the other guys . I know if we fight and I can count on you to crash at your place . You'll treat me just as if everything was okay , and you'll cry alone at night ." She stated and tears were running down both of there faces
He wiped his own eyes before wiping hers and he kissed her head and he held her "your happy and that makes me happy, you'll look amazing ."
She nodded and they talked about Mandy for moments she told him he'd meet Austin there , and he nodded , but the truth is she wasn't happy . She was only happy with him , and they only existed in a parallel universe.
Remember the nights where we slid out right on the pavement?
Staring up as we'd watch the stars dance across the evening sky .
And why'd we move away from quiet country?
Trading rubber and dust for rubble and rust as we fade away underneath the city lights.
Underneath the city lights
Underneath the city lights
As we're fading away underneath the city lights
