– September 1st
I walked into the dining room where the rest of my family was seated for the funnest time of day, family breakfast. Everyone looked up when I entered, I was late, and again, a look of distain crossed my mothers face when she saw that I was still in my pyjamas.
“Abelinda, do you think you could at least put some normal clothes on for breakfast.” she said whilst I plopped into my seat. “It really is not that hard, if you want I can have one of the elves lay some clothes out for you.”
“Mum how many times have I told you, it’s Abbie,“ I groaned, sliding down in my seat, “And I don’t need an elf to help me get dressed in the morning, I am 15 ok? And they probably wouldn’t know what I liked even if they did.” I muttered.
“Well then start wearing proper clothes to breakfast if you are such a capable young adult.” This earned a snicker from my older brother, causing me to turn around and glare at him. My mother helped herself to scrambled eggs, showing that our conversation was over. Sighing, I glanced down at my black tank top and Winnie the Pooh pyjama bottoms. Again I wasn’t good enough.
“At least she actually wore a bra to breakfast today.” My ever so helpful older brother scoffed as he munched on a piece of bacon.
“Stop staring at my boobs, will you?” I plainly stated, not even looking at him and his immaturity. I reached out to the plate in front of me where the toast was, hot and buttered, just how I like it. I looked around, spotting where my favourite jam was, the instant I spotted it I reached out grasping the jar tightly, and sat back down. I struggled to unscrew the lid, but I eventually did it. Not even bothering with a knife or spoon I tipped the jar up and over my toast.
“Abbie, don’t put so much onto your toast!” my mother yelled.
“But I like it.” I plainly stated, hiding my smirk. My father snapped his fingers and in an instant my plate dissappered. I turned in my seat to glare at my father, who was slumped in his chair looking exhausted, as usual. ‘Abbie, please, just go upstairs; I can’t be dealing with you right now. I’m too tired.”
“Fine.” I said grumpily pushing my chair back and grabbing another piece of already buttered toast, and stomping out of the dining room. I munched on my piece of toast as I neared the grand staircase. When I had reached the stairs, I had finished my slice of toast and I wiped my hands on my trousers, getting the crumbs and butter off my hands. I started up the stairs.
I was halfway up to my stairs to my room when a house elf raced up to me.
“Miss Malfoy?”
“Yes?”
“Mrs. Malfoy requested that I tell you that you must leave in one hour to get to the station. By then you need to be showered, packed, dressed and your hair must be presentable.” the little elf rushed to speak.
I looked at the house elf unsure of what to say. “Um, ok? Thanks, urm could you possibly ask someone to help me pack please?” I always found talking to house-elves awkward. I hated the thought of innocent little creatures being forced to literally do my dirty work.
“Of cause Miss Malfoy,” the little elf paused for a second, “would you like me to do it for you Miss?”
“Urm yeah, sure, um could you do that whilst I have a quick shower?” I asked, slowly regretting that I left everything to the last minute.
“Of cause Miss, shall I lay out an outfit for you?”
“That would be amazing!” I exclaimed, turning on my heel and rushing up the stairs before the elf could reply. I ran into my bedroom to grab my towel. I then dashed into my en suite, turning the shower on and then peeling off my pyjamas. I let my dyed brown hair out of its plait. Taking a minute to admire it in the mirror. I twirled one of my ombre curls around my finger. I had dyed my platinum blonde locks dark brown and had then dyed the tips blonde over the course of the summer, wanting a change. I had also gone to Hawaii with some friends and had gotten myself an amazing tan.
Finally reality caught up with me and I realised I needed to be quick. I stepped into the shower, humming as the hot water hit my skin. I closed my eyes and tilted my head back, letting the hot water run through my curls.

I stepped out of my shower and reached for my towel, wrapping it around my body. I reached for my small hand towel and attempted to dry my hair as well as I could. Giving up with that endeavor, I opened the door to my bedroom only to be greeted by the sight of my trunk and owl cage neatly waiting by the door. On my four-poster bed my outfit for the day was neatly set out. I let out a slow breath when I saw what the house-elf had laid out, I stand corrected, they do know how I dress. Set out in front of me was a baggy, plain grey jumper that I had completely forgotten about, a pair of skinny yet baggy wash jeans, a grey pair of ankle uggs that I was unaware of owning and a cute pink beany. I smiled to myself, amazed that a house elf of all creatures could produce such a cute but comfy and casual outfit. I slipped into a pair of bra and pants that she had also left out and then picked up my jeans. As I slid them over my legs I beamed at my body. Last year I had turned into a maniac trying to get into shape for the summer and thankfully it had paid off. I pulled the jumper over my head just as my mother walked into my room.
“Abeli-I mean Abbie, I’m sorry, I-I don’t know what’s wrong with me. I-“
“Mum, don’t worry, I get it – Draco and dad have some sh*t going on, don’t worry about me. I’m your daughter, I can handle it by myself.” I replied deciding to just let bygones be bygones. My mother smiled at me pulling me into a fierce hug.
“Here, let me do your hair.” She pulled me by the arm over to my dressing table and pulled out her wand. She pointed it at my curly hair, muttering an incantation and instantly drying my hair. She then picked up my hairbrush and started brushing my curls.
“Mum, what are you do-“
“Because sometimes it is nice to brush it and feel it run over my hands like silk.” She smiled as she carried on brushing my hair. I let out a content sigh and leaned back in my chair. I checked the time on my phone, 09:45, 15 minutes until we had to leave. I reached out for my makeup bag, which the house elf hadn’t actually packed yet. Unzipping it I reached inside and started pulling out my various bits of make up.
“Abbie?” My mother stopped brushing my hair, “Promise me you won’t get into any trouble this year and please promise me that you will stay close to your brother; bad things are going to happen this year.” She looked at me for a moment to look at me in the mirror. My gaze met hers and she quickly looked away. “Abbie, you are so precious to me, I can’t lose you as well.” Her voice sounded strained and muffled.
“Mum, I-I know you want to protect me, but I promise not to meddle with the wrong people, I-I love you, mum. I love you, and dad, and even Draco. I love you guys so much.” I choked out the last part. We had never been an openly emotional family; this was a bit of different feeling for me. My mother turned my face so she was looking directly into my eyes, as if she was searching for something, anything. “Just don’t befriend the wrong people. Be on the right side at the right time and for gods sake Abelinda keep in touch with me, we bought you that damn owl for a reason.” She let go of my face and turned my head so I was facing the mirror. I shakily picked up my foundation and brush and hastily applied it to my face; I then got to work on my eyes rimming them with brown eyeliner. I then coated my lashes with brown mascara and finally finished my look with a bright red lipstick. I smiled at my reflection, dress to impress, right? Meanwhile my mother had braided my hair into a fishtail plait that fell down over my right shoulder. My mother fiddles with a few loose strands of hair pinning them into place with some bobby pins. “Perfect.”
I picked up my beanie, and placed it on top of my head, leaving my fringe out, which my mother had used her wand to straighten.
“My perfect little girl.”
