Shot: A Novel

Chapter Six

                                                                   -Rachel-

     "Remind me why we are on leashes, being lead by a dog," Sean says from behind me. I laugh as Pol tries to tell Sean to shut up.

     "Because I don't trust you and until we find Aph and Ares. I am in charge, pet." I say to him mockingly. He rolls his eyes and Pol elbows him in the gut. I smile seeing Pol trying to prevent the problem. "I like you better than Sean. Keep this up and I may let you off your leash, maybe." I smile and continue to walk while Sean and Pol try to argue 'quietly'. Where are you Aph? I need your help with two impossible guys, while I sent the third one after you. What if he is hurting you?

     I open my eyes to the bright afternoon sun. I was laying on the roof in just my jeans and t-shirt, great. I sit up and look around and I see Ares on the porch playing the violin softly. I smile and lay on my stomach watching him. He doesn't see me so I lay my head on my arm to watch him play. After what has been a song I think. Ares sets the violin down and walks into the forest. I watch him walk off then I slip off the roof landing in the front yard almost on top of a tree trunk.

     I look out to try to see him but I can't spot him through the trees. I look at the violin in the open case it was a light worn down color. I sit on the porch step and look at the violin. It seemed to be very used, but with a lot of care too. The strings were brand new and it had a new coat of stain that I could smell. Then I heard voices coming back this way one was Ares and another was male but I didn't recognize it. I stand up and climb back up to the roof and I lay on my stomach to watch Ares and a tall bleach blonde guy. I pretend to be sleeping while I listen to their conversation.

     "Yeah found her and her best friend at a high school in Colorado. They were pretending to be seniors." I hear Ares say as he sits on the porch below.

     "You sure she is what you say she is?" I hear the blonde's deep voice ask.

     "Yeah, that and more." Are says laughing and the blonde laughs too. I clench my fists not liking my back to Ares. His pale brown eyes look me up and down then look over my shoulder and chuckles to himself.

     "This is her? She doesn't look like much Ares." The blonde says skeptically. I smile devilishly and slam my knee up in between his legs. He gasps his eyes wide with shock as he falls to his knees in front of me.

     "Say that to my face blondie," I tell him sweetly then quickly turn around to face Ares. He takes the shock off his face as soon as I turn around, but not quick enough. I smile innocently at him and take a step forward.

     "Now, Aphrodite calm down please..." my laugh cuts Ares off, it was cold and cruel sounding.

     "Calm down? Are you serious Ares? You were talking to this guy here," I point to the blonde groaning on the ground, "about me Ares and you were also talking about Rachel. What gives?" My voice shaking by the end of the sentence. He takes a step forward and I flinch. He sighs and stays where he is.

     "Aphrodite, please hear me out before you beat me unconscious," Ares says in a way you talk to a mentally insane person. I growl but otherwise stay quiet for him to continue to explain. "One you need to be gentler, Dilan is a human. Two Dilan will be finding Rachel and you a safe place with bodyguards to protect you." He tells me as he sits on the porch.

     "Protection! Why would we need protection, Ares?" I yell at him but he doesn't even flinch.

     "If we can find you others can too, there are people out there that want people like us dead Aphrodite." Ares's voice is full of pain and anger. I take a step back and Dilan grabs my leg pulling it out from underneath me. I land on my back and I bite my lip to keep from screaming. I felt my wing snap when I landed on my back. I feel Dilan sit on my knees and pinning my wrists down. My eyes are closed fighting tears. I hear Ares telling Dilan something, but I couldn't make it out. I feel Ares's hand on my cheek brushing something wet away.
