One month later...
The doorbell rang. You were laying in bed dreading to escape from the warmth of your blankets to the cold, brisk air of a typical Winter day. You reached your hand to the side to feel the warm touch beside you. All you felt was nothing but the remainder of the sheets on the bed. You looked over at the clock.
The time read 7:00 AM. Way too early, but Aaron had already left for his new job at the theatre by then.
The doorbell rang again. You groaned as you relinquished yourself from the soft surface of your bed. You grabbed an oversized T shirt and pajama bottoms from off the floor and ran downstairs toward the door. You didn't even pay attention to the fact that you looked a mess: without a bra, messy hair, and wearing a button down shirt more than four times your size. You finally opened the door releasing all the cold, windy air that had been struggling to enter the house through the blockage of the door and windows.
Standing in front of you was who appeared to be a man in the uniform of a police officer.
"Mrs. Tveit," he asked.
"Soon to be," you corrected him.
"Of course," he said and cleared his throat. "I apologize. Did I wake you?"
"No," you lied. "I've been up for hours."
"Well, Mrs. Tveit," he started. "I'm ever so sorry to come to you at such an early hour, but I fear that it's urgent that we discuss this now."
"What is it," you said with a shaking voice as you felt your heart beginning to pound toward your eardrums.
"It's your... fiancée," he corrected himself. "I'm afraid that there's been an accident."
You stood there in silence staring at him in disbelief. You could just feel your stomach drop and afraid you were about to throw up.

"Excuse me," you replied after a long pause. "Did I-- did I hear you wrong?"
"I'm afraid not, ma'am," he said assuringly. "Now if you maybe wanted to get dressed into some warmer clothes, then I can escort you--"
"No," you shouted but in a smaller tone than you intended. "You really think that you have every right to just come up to my doorstep at such an hour and tell me that my future husband is probably--"
"Ma'am," he tried to confront you as you collapsed to the floor bawling. "Please. I can assure you that if you come with me, you will be able to receive a status of his condition. But I'm afraid I can't give you any further information at the moment. I can take you to him. I promise."
You looked up to him with a stern, damp face. But you knew you couldn't keep Aaron waiting for you. You were sure he was desperate to see you. As much as you didn't like it, you still nodded your head in agreement. The officer picked you up off the floor and you ran upstairs to quickly get changed. You threw on an oversized sweatshirt, leggings, and your Ugg boots. The fact that you didn't even match was the last thing on your mind.
You arrived to the emergency room and the trooper led you inside and you rushed up to the nurse's station.
"Can I help you," asked one of the nurses.
"Yes, you can," you said condescendingly. "I'm here to see Tveit... Aaron."
"Oh him," the nurse said and then searched her clipboard. "I'm afraid he's..."
You stood there frozen. Your eyes widened again and began to feel short of breath. Was he...?
"Right here," she pointed his name after skimming through the long list of patients. "Are you family?"
"His... fiancée," you admitted as you began to gain your breath back.
"Oh congrats," she walked over to you with a grin.
"Thanks," you said annoyingly staring at her blankly.
Did she really think you went all this way to talk about your engagement?
"Right this way," she finally stated and began leading you down the hall.
You finally approached a room with the curtain being the only thing preventing you from seeing that sparkling smile.
"Now I just want to assure you that he might be--"
"Just let me see him already," you shouted softly.
The nurse stared at you with a weird look on her face. She opened the curtain. Your eyes widened.
You saw him laying in the hospital bed. You wanted to see his blue eyes, but all you saw were his eyelids along with black and blue marks around his face. His body appeared lifeless.
