When we came home and told aunt Sue about the invitation I had never seen her so happy in my life. She was jumping for joy, hugging and kissing us, "Oh my goodness, oh my goodness, I-I got to fix my hair, bake a cake. Oh no what I'm I going to wear," she panicked. Myself and uncle Ben chuckled, it was amusing seeing her ecstatic, so jumpy it was another rarity.
Aunt Sue was so excited so ecstatic about the invitation she bragged about it to everyone, so much so all of Lockmore knew. When Mrs Jacobs came to our house, aunt Sue was bragging about her invitation and how it is important to make a good first impression. She also discussed on how it could eventually bring them into their "circle of friends", I rolled my eyes as I heard their conversation. I guess to me it wasn't that big of a deal, I mean we were just having dinner that's all, it wasn't like it was some important meeting or something that will determined uncle Ben's future or anything like that. After aunt Sue and Mrs Jacobs's tea talk was over Mrs Jacobs approached me.
"Someone is swell headed."
"Yeah she's been like this all week."
"Hey Isabella keep your eyes wide open okay."
"Why?."
" You know how your aunt is like Isabella, she'll eventually put you into a unwanted situation."
I already knew aunt Sue can be extremely stubborn, it's her way or no way. But I wasn't quite sure what Mrs Jacobs was talking about. She seemed serious and concerned It was the first time I'd ever seen her like that. Mrs Jacobs saw the confusion on my face and sighed.
"Listen Isabella, you already know one of the McNamara boys is turning twenty one you clearly know what that means, what I'm trying to say is that your aunt is using you to try and marry her way into the McNamaras through you, do you understand."
Hearing Mrs Jacobs telling me something I already knew increased my second thoughts. When we got the invitation and told aunt Sue about it I started to have second thoughts because I knew what aunt Sue's objective was. But it wasn't until Mrs Jacobs warned me that going to the McNamaras might put me into tough situation, but if that happened then what, aunt Sue was a very powerful woman, she had the ability to make things go her way no matter what the circumstances were. At the end of the day things would always go her way, how was I supposed to compete with that.
Mrs Jacobs grabbed my shoulders and pulled me closer to her, "Listen to me and listen very carefully, you've always been a push over Isabella, you let everyone tell you what to do without putting your own foot down. This time you have to turn the tables, this time you have to make sure you don't appear that way, not everything has to go your aunt's way. I know there are some girls in this town who would kill to be in your shoes and for that reason this should be your decision not Sue's understand."
I took Mrs Jacobs advice into consideration she was absolutely right, aunt Sue is no magician I had to take change if I wanted to end the visit the way I want. Aunt Sue approached us suspiciously, "Don't give us that look Sue I was just talking to the girl," said Mrs Jacobs, as she walked out the door with aunt Sue. When night came I couldn't sleep I was constantly thinking about my conversation with Mrs Jacobs, at first the invitation wasn't a big deal to me, but as I laid on my bed it totally was.
The visit was getting closer as the week went by myself and aunt Sue went to the grocery store after a long day of shopping, aunt Sue was going on and on about the visit. Once we walked in the grocery store I sensed a million glares aimed towards us as we were picking out the items. I glanced across the grocery store from the corner of my eye almost every married woman in Lockmore and their daughters who were eighteen and older were there with a scowl in their faces. It seemed that aunt Sue didn't notice the looks that we were getting or knowing aunt Sue she was probably doing it on purpose, trying to make them jealous, oh how I wanted her to stop.
