I know the whole mermaid concept is very strange for a fanfic and Lauren typically wouldn't mix with One Direction but I love both and haven't seen a fanfic like this so I thought it'd be fun to try it out. It may be hard to write about mermaid characters since they won't be able to function like we do but I'm up for the challenge. I know the trailer isn't amazing per say I'll try to update a better version once I figure out iMovie I'm bad with technology sorry. All constructive criticism is appreciated. When you were little, you wanted to hold the entire universe in the palm of your hand. Nothing was intangible; the sky was the limit. There was something magical about finally reaching adulthood. It was like a bubble consumed your very being and there was not anything nor anyone that could burst it.

It's comical really; when you're younger and naive, you want nothing more than for time to speed up in order to become what you've always aspired to be, an adult. But as you grow older, oh how you wish you could turn back time.

"Mommy, why the sun 'ellow? Somethin so shiny oughtta be pwetty but 'ellow icky." The four year old always seemed to have these random thoughts throughout the day; plenty a time had they been more bizarre than this.

Her mom thought carefully before answering. "Well sweetie, it's not always about what's on the outside. Without the sun, you'd die. One day you'll find someone who loves you very much like mommy and daddy. He might not be pretty to others but in your eyes he'll be the most beautiful person in the world." This may seem perplexing for a toddler, but Sofia was a special little one.

"Don' be silly mommy I'll always love 'ou da most. Do I win if er'yone thinks he's pwetty?" she giggles with flushed cheeks staring into the distance as she contemplates what she just said.

"I hope you stay true to that honey and why yes you do. You'll win but he'll win the ultimate prize. He'd be lucky to have you." Allowing her mom to hold her hand tightly as they crossed the congested road, Sofia smiled softly.

At night when Sofia lay snuggled under her Little Mermaid blanket, she thought of something else. What if Ariel isn't made up? Just because mommy and daddy don't think mermaids are real, doesn't mean anything. They get all jumpy whenever I bring it up. It makes me feel like they're hiding something. I wonder if they'll tell me what's going on.

Sofia's POV

As teenagers, we are faced with more than just hormones & puberty. Not only do our mood swings go haywire, but insecurity arises within us. I'm not talking the melodramatic babbling that society portrays as normal for teenage girls; it's as if one is battling with themselves to successfully avoid identity theft.

You latch onto at least one creation―one form of expression―to rightfully claim as yours that entitles your entire persona.

Some―not all―may label themselves as an Arctic Monkeys fanatic to set a grunge vibe and be associated with leather, dark, out there.

Yours truly―fourteen-year-old Sofia Lynn Harper―isn't into the whole sex appeal; I'm the total opposite. The Disney classic, red-headed goddess herself, Ariel, has become my role model. Over the years, she's been the one sense of comfort in my life. I've watched the film relentless times and I'll continue doing so for decades to come.

Mom and dad still get antsy whenever I bring up mermaids, but at this point I've found it best to just give up on them ever confessing why. There's no point in bringing it up anymore.

Before I could reach over to turn off the lamp at my bedside, I heard a loud crash that sounded like it came from just outside my door. I went into panic mode. I wouldn't know what to do if something horrible happened to my parents; they're all I have.

"Mom? Dad? Are you alright?" my voice wavered, barely audible. What appeared to be a guy mermaid―merman?―burst the door open and seized me. Had his lower half not left me stunned, he would've been struggling to keep me silent. Bastard seemed to take notice as both his arms ensured I wouldn't escape yet my mouth was left to its own free will.

My captor was an attractive, fairly young fella complete with curly chestnut hair, forest green eyes, and adorable dimples. His good looks didn't stop me from hating him though. His teal tail propelled us forward as I struggled against his sturdy chest. A glowing portal burst out of nowhere and sucked us in.

The stranger finally released me. Where am I? Woah, there's no way I'm under the sea. Nope, there's definitely everything from tiny clown fish to sea anemone here. Hold on a second. These creatures are made to live underwater, but I'm not. Shouldn't water be filling my lungs right now?

I test out breathing and unexpectedly, I'm completely fine. It feels just like breathing on land. How is that even possible?

"Relax love, you can breathe under water okay you'll be fine." Oh look who finally decided to speak up.

"With all due respect, who the hell are you and why did you bring me here? And last time I checked, us humans can't breathe underwater so what's going on?" I shot him an accusatory glare.

"If you calm down, I promise I'll explain everything, but no swearing!" His firm tone had me shaking my head in agreement in seconds.

"Hi Sofia, I'm Harry. Sorry this is going to be a lot to take in, but basically you're a mermaid princess that was kidnapped thirteen years ago. Your powers as princess are just now starting to work since you're back where you belong. Welcome home." If I wasn't so overwhelmed, I'd definitely be cooing over his timid, genuine smile.

Talk about a lot to take in. Not only have I been brought up with a false identity, but I'm royalty. Not even human royalty at that, I'm a mythical creature. Never in a million years would I have guessed any of this would happen.

Yet that was only the beginning for I had no idea how much my life was about to change.
