(if anyone reads this and suggests it, I'll only update every ten days and separate each chapter by ten pages, instead of doing a single page every day. for now I'm gonna update every day.)
Atena looked at herself in the mirror.
I look so much more dignified than I used to, she thought. I am leading an entire company now, all by myself. A woman in today's society no less.
She splashed water on her face-
"Atena," her brother called. "What are you doing- are you using my face wash? Put that down!"
Okuda took the soap and put it up as high as he could on the bathroom shelf. He put his hands on his hips and sighed.
"You're only eight and you're already trying to act like an adult. Agh you're growing up too fast. Wash that stuff out of your face and I'll take you to school."
"I can walk," Atena told him. "All of the boys can walk."
Okuda sighs again. "Yes, but you know why. If you were alive thirty years ago this wouldn't be a problem, but in today's world we need to take precautions."
"The only way they'll perceive me as someone strong... Is if I demonstrate behavior that suggests I am someone to be reckoned with."
"Where did you hear that from, the TV?"
Atena reached for her hairbrush on the counter and looked at her reflection as she brushed her abnormally long hair. "You know I'm too busy reading to watch TV."
"Did you read it in a book then?"
"No," there was a knot in her hair, even though she brushes twice a day. She'll need to keep it better if she wants people to take her seriously. "These words came straight from my mouth. If I am going to be treated as a normal student, I am going to have to act like one. It's bad enough you made me get a skirt."
"Where is this coming from? Did someone pick on you-"
"I don't know what you are talking about, brother. Do you not find it odd every other student in my grade is walking home."
"The girls aren't."
"The other girls are wimps," she justified. "They need to adapt to survive."
Okuda gave up and left the bathroom.
With the male out of the room, Atena put down the brush, and continued to look at her reflection.
What just happened? A minute ago she could see an adult version of herself in that mirror. And now it's just a little girl attempting to use facial wash for the first time. Her brother was right about it being odd for her to use facial wash at her age, but why was she using it in the first place? It's true she wants to maintain her look of dignity when returning to school, however she would never try using face wash, made for men, when she's too young to even need it.
Atena picked up her bag and moved to head to the front door, preparing to say "I am leaving for school, but I will come back!" as any Japanese student would say to his or her family; except she could hear something. It was a barely audible sound, from the opposite side of her father's study.
