"I'm tired of this already," Dawn complained. She slumped against her desk and squirmed around to find comfort in the tiny space. Like the other girls at the party, she stayed up all night listening to music and talking. Much to her dismay, school started the day after and she had no time to compose herself. Her black hair was in disarray and she had no time to fix her school uniform, which was all wrinkly.
"Dawn, are you okay?" Lucas laughed as he toke the seat next to her.
"She stayed up last night partying hard," Hilda turned to speak.
"Big facts," Dawn grumbled. Dawn needed at least nine hours of sleep and she only had four, "Without any coffee, I don't think I'll last till break."
"I'll pay for coffee later if you want," Lucas offered as she lethargically patted his arm in response, "Moo Moo's Milk bar right after school."
"Simp!" Hilda lazily rolled her eyes and shook her head at Lucas. Both glared at each other, though Dawn thought it was funny.
"Hilda, go fuck that new kid over there and leave him alone," Hilda's sarcasm jolted Dawn awake as she kicked the back of Hilda's leg and pointed to the new student in front of the classroom with her thumb. He was lean and northern Unovian looking. He had dark brown locks, that reached to the middle of his neck and instead of the school blazer, he had on a blue hoodie. Dawn leaned over to whisper in her ear, "Hilbert Touya or something, he's from the northern Unova region and he is apparently a tough battler."
"I mean he is kind of cute, but how do you know all of this?"
"Do you why my hair is so big?"
"Because it's full of secrets."
"Exactly and I've heard that he totally crushed Cheren at that battling competition in Nuvema Town in Unova last year."
"Are you talking about the Nuvema invitational?" A male voice popped up in there conversation frightening Hilda and Dawn. It was the new kid taking the empty seat right next to Hilda. She quickly pulled away from Dawn, sweating profusely, praying to Arceus that he did not hear them talking about him earlier. Hilda hurried to compose herself as Dawn went through many answers in her head to try and fix the situation.
"Yeah, Hilda here," Dawn awkwardly paused to point to Hilda, "was in the Nuvema invitational a whiles back."
"Uh yeah, I tied for first a few years ago." Hilda nervously laughed. She was telling the truth though, since it was a starter battlers' competition in her hometown. She beat Bianca in the semi-finals but when it came to the finals, she tied with Cheren with her Solosis and his Dewott.
"No shot, you're Hilda Touko!" He gasped excitedly as his eyes widened.
"Yeah," She responded sheepishly, turning to Dawn for help.
"I saw that match with you and Cheren! You were so cool with your Tepig and Solosis. Oh and that move with your Serperior," He continued gush as Hilda began to blush.
"What a guy." Dawn silently mocked. as the sounds of the morning bell filled the class room
———
"Just follow me, I have battling practice next too," Hilda stated as she dragged him and Dawn along the crowded hallways.
"This school is way too big," Hilbert remarked as he started at the tall ceilings. The academy was an elite school that accommodated for trainers, coordinators, rangers, and researchers of all kinds. It had to be large with gyms, classrooms, stages, and research labs for the few thousand students who were even fit to come. "I'm in battle gym two."
"All second years are in battle gym two," Dawn said, "Which school did you transfer from?"
"Castelia's School for Aspiring Trainers," Hilbert answered quickly, "I had to retake the entrance exam for here a few months ago."
"All I can say is the Professor's Academy for the Gifted is way different from any other school. You've got rangers, coordinators, trainers and researchers crammed into one school." Dawn listed, "Anyways, this hallway splits into two, one going to the ranger division and one going into the trainer division."
"Stick away from the rangers, they're... passionate." Hilda remarked as they toke a right into the trainer division. "I get that they don't capture Pokémon but they don't have to judge us for catching when they keep partner Pokémon ."
"Facts, like capture on? Pokeballs are easier than that shit." Dawn mocked as they reached the gym. "Oh shit we never introduced ourselves. My name is Dawn Platinum."
"Hilda Touko, but you already know that." Hilda gave a wide toothed grin as she shook his hand. Hilbert's face slowly grew red as he continued to look at her. From her wild, dark brown hair that was contained in a ponytail to her large brown eyes, he was trapped in attraction.
"H-Hilbert Tōya." He managed to let out.
"Did you bring extra clothes because sometimes there's nothing protecting you from crazy elemental Pokémon moves?" Hilda asked. She pulled out her usual vest, white t-shirt, and shorts from inside her school bag, "The uniform rules don't apply in the battling gym."
"Hilda's actually right. I heard from May, who heard from Benji, who heard from Caitlyn that Lysandre's uniform was totally burnt to a crisp from Maxie's Camerupt. It was super embarrassing since he had to spend the whole day in that burnt uniform. Lysandre had to pay for a new one too." Dawn gossiped as both Hilda and Hilbert gave confused looks, "Okay shut your faces, you hear a lot of shit in the contest division."
"Yeah, yeah. I packed some jeans and a shirt." Hilbert awkwardly stated, "Is there like a locker room?"
"Yeah, wait." Hilda exclaimed as she spotted Red going over to the boy's locker room . He always walked alone during gym, mainly because Hilda and Dawn were the only other people in their group of eleven people to be in the same battling classes. "Hey Red!" Recognizing her voice, Red's feet refused to move as she came over to him.
"That wasn't cool. You know, what you did last night," Red fumed as she rolled her eyes. He bent over embarrassed and whispered in her ear, "You know how much I..."
"I mean like it's not a secret. Everyone fucking knows." Hilda deadpanned, silencing Red. She pointed to Hilbert behind her and stated, "Anyways, this Hilbert and he's new and he's looking for the boy's locker room."
"Uh hi," Red greeted, earning a wave from Hilbert, "Yeah I'll take him to the locker rooms."
"You're a blessing from Arceus itself." Hilda have him a hard slap on the back of his neck, hard enough to leave a large, red reminder. "I heard Leaf's never been into Blue before if that floats your boat."
"I don't hate you anymore," Red declared as Hilbert followed him like a loyal Lilipup.
———
"My name's Red Fires." Red awkwardly stated as he stood beside Hilbert in the gym.
"Hilbert Touya." Hilbert responded just as awkward.
"Unova?"
"Yeah."
"Cool."
"Are you and uh Hilda a thing?"
"I think that's the grossest thing anyone's ever asked me." Red openly gagged as Hilbert stood there, uncomfortably as sweat pooled up in his palms. "Hilda is like an annoying little sister."
"Oh my bad." Hilbert looked off to the side as he grabbed his first pokéball. He hoped he didn't come off as too straightforward.
"Why, are you into her?" Red softly laughed as he adjusted his red and white, color block jacket. He noticed as Hilbert's face grew redder and redder into a tomato berry scarlet. "You're so lucky that guys and girls are separate today for battle exams."
"Recruiting the new kid?" Another boy came by with light brown, spiky hair, "That's cheap, considering that it's partner exam day. You're totally gonna lose anyways"
"Fuck off Blue." Red rolled his eyes, he was used to Blue's teasing. He has been dealing with Blue's attitude since he was five after all. Blue playfully shrugged before he ran off to some poor bystander to partner up with him. "You wanna be partners anyways?"
"Sure, I'm down to beat his asshole face if you are." Hilbert gave him a loud high-five, "I got a Braviary, a Musharna, a Joltick, a Tirtouga, and a Pignite."
"We could probably use your Musharna. Does your Musharna have trick room?"
"Yeah, it was one of the first moves I gave to Musharna." Hilbert looked around, seeing the rest of the boys in their class. They had already found partners too, he was just lucky Red had asked him instead of the other way around.
"We'll start with that first since Musharna's a slower pokémon. I'll use my Espeon." Red stated, leaving three pokéballs of his own. "Did you have partner exams in your old school?"
"Ah, yeah. Double battle with a one pokémon limit, right?" Hilbert answered as Red gave him a nod. Red held out his hand as Hilbert threw him several of his own pokéballs to put on the limit tables
"Of course the new kid gets Red." Several boys in the class groaned, looking at their own partners in comparison. "He's top of the class."
"Really?" Hilbert turned to Red. Red groaned in response because deep inside, he was embarrassed. He placed first in the trainer's entrance exam and second in the researcher's entrance exam. He's won dozens of competitions for the school and has even interned for Professor Rowan in Sinnoh just by recommendations alone. Red was a battling prodigy with brains to match however did not have willpower to deal with the attention.
"I don't know." Red simply responded. He remained humble and he knew where he stood. "I'm just a kid from Pallet Town."
"Hold up, that Blue guy is paired up with Alder's grandson." Hilbert pointed to the kid with spiky, red and orange hair. Three pokéballs were slung on his neck in a large necklace and he wore a simple tank top and shorts. "He has a Garchomp and a Larvesta on standby."
"That makes things less hard." Red thought aloud as Hilbert followed him to the battle areas that were outlined in white tape. "Professor will choose the different team pair ups so we might not have to battle them."
"Red's team vs. Blue's team to start us off." Kukui roared, much to their dismay.
"How ironic," Hilbert laughed as he brought out his Musharna.
"Musha!" It exclaimed. The lavender purple and pink Pokémon levitated above the field lazily as it waited for its owner to give it orders.
"Let's go Espeon." Red grinned, throwing out the Pokémon. Espeon ran beside the Musharna and raised its lavender tail.
"Gabite, come on out!" Benja exclaimed.
"Wartortle, you know what to do." Blue yelled with all his might.
"Wartortle, quick attack on Espeon." Blue ordered, starting off the battle with an attack on his self proclaimed rival. It landed a hit before it drew back to its side of the battle field.
"Hyponosis." The word flew off of Red's mouth as his Espeon knew what to do and who to hit. The Wartortle immediately passed out on the side as Blue threw an intimidating scowl off to Red. "Good job."
"Gabite, toxic on Musharna." Benja declared as Gabite created a purple veil of poison that surrounded Musharna. However it's synchronize ability caused the Gabite to also be poisoned.
"Musharna, trick room!" Hilbert yelled. The whole terrain turned into a green grid. "Now psyshock on Gabite." Musharna was moving faster than the rest of the pokémon on the battle field and unleashed a strong psychedelic wave on Gabite, who was already poisoned by Musharna's synchronize. Musharna still lost a little health however because of its poisoning from before before it shook of the poisoning.
"Wartortle, wake up and use growl." Blue groaned as the blue turtle Pokémon continued to sleep.
"Gabite, earthquake." The ground shook beneath them as Espeon was hurt from the momentum. Red stood his ground as Hilbert's legs almost gave out from the tremor. Luckily Musharna's levitation left it unharmed. .
"Espeon, use future sight," Red ordered.
"Dream eater on Wartortle." Musharna regained her health from Wartortle's dreams.
"Finally! Rain dance!" Blue exclaimed. Droplets of rain were summoned out of nowhere leaving the terrain, pokémon, and trainers drenched.
"Dawn was right about the whole clothes thing." Hilbert commented while he wringed out excesses water from his jacket.
"She told you about the Lysandre story, right?" He laughed as Gabite tried to hit Espeon with Iron Tail. Luckily Espeon dodged the attack to avoid anymore damage.
"Stop talking you Arceus damn pussy and fight me." Blue yelled from across the field, earning a glare from Professor Kukui.
"Use confusion on Gabite." Red exclaimed, praying to Arceus that Gabite would become confused. Espeon unleashed a purple beam that shook Gabite until it's eyes started spinning like a Spinda.
"Use Hypnosis on Wartortle." Wartortle slept again, much to Blue's frustration.
"Wake up and use water gun!" Wartortle was fast asleep, much to Blue's dismay.
"Bulldoze!" Gabite only hurt itself trying to shake the ground.
"Use psychic on Gabite." Red grinned as he knew what was going to happen next. Another psychedelic beam hit Gabite causing the Dragon pokémon to pass out on the ground, leaving Wartortle to be the last Pokémon standing. However, the future sight attack from before struck Wartortle with a heavy blast. Both Pokémon fainted on Blue's team.
"Red and Hilbert, you guys pass." Professor Kukui proclaimed as the rest of the class cheered. Blue quickly stormed off to the bleachers as Benja shook their hands.
"That was fun. I just love ruining Blue's day," Red happily sighed as they walked off the battle ground, "Do you wanna see the girls' battle?"
"Do you think we can?"
"I mean, we finished our battle." Red shrugged as they toke their pokéballs and walked outside. Technically, the two were not supposed to leave but Professor Kukui was too invested in the next battle to care. They were greeted in extreme brightness as they walked out. "Arceus damn it Dawn."
Dawn and Hilda were paired up with a Pignite and Cherrim and were fighting against Misty's Staryu and Candice's Snower. Red figured that Dawn used Sunny Day to power both Pignite and Cherrim up.
"Flame thrower on Snower." Hilda shouted as her Pignite quickly knocked out Candice's Snower with a blast of fire.
"Solar beam!" Dawn exclaimed as Cherrim quickly charged a glowing beam at Staryu that knocked it out instantly. Professor Juniper gave them a pass for the exam and sent the four off.
"Wow." Hilbert simply commented as his eyes never left Hilda. "That was fast."
"Candice was always at a disadvantage from the start and Misty could have had a chance if her Staryu was faster." Red noted as they walked over to the girls. Hilbert could tell why the other students glared at him for partnering with Red. "Good job."
"Yeah, you guys were crazy out there." Hilbert chuckled as Hilda gave him the hardest high five.
"Thanks. Hey, a bunch of us are going to hang later. You guys wanna join?" Hilda happily asked. Red gave a knowing look to Hilbert as he nodded for the both of them.
"Sorry Hilda. I have plans with Lucas," Dawn said as she earned a teasing grin from Hilda.
"Then it's just us, Serena, Calem, and Leaf then." Hilda sighed.
