CHAPTER ONE

Avery's Pov.

BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! I went to smash my alarm clock and raised my hand in the air. Then the beeping stopped and I remember I don't have an alarm clock. I sat up, and saw my little brother Derek holding his phone out and laughing. That little-

"Gotcha Av!" He squealed as he ran out of my room. I laughed at his little prank, he's only 10 and I'm 18, what's the worst he could do? I chased after him and practically flew down the stairs. I dove and with my horrible coordination, face planted. But when he laughed and began to run again, I grabbed his ankle and brought him to the ground. Once I was satisfied with his torturous screams, I let him go then ran upstairs to get ready.

I took a shower and got dressed. I went to the mirror and brushed out my long hair, leaving it natural to dry. I ran downstairs, grabbed an apple, and ran out the door. I knocked on my neighbor's door. A wide awake Aiden answered the door.

Aiden was my best friend and had been for many years.

"Ready for summer Av?" He asked.

"Yes! A thousand times yes!" I cheered. I bounced on my feet out of excitement. He put his hands on my shoulders to stop my bouncing.

"Ready for our first day in the treehouse?" He asked happily. I nodded eagerly and bounced again.

The treehouse was about a mile away up in the hills behind our houses. It was a hidden treehouse that was built amazingly well so it had multiple doors and windows. There were blinds and actual glass for the windows. It didn't get dirty all year long at all. It was sealed up. Only we knew about it and it was our tradition to spend the first and lasts nights and days of summer there.

We had to pack supplies for those two days because we made a pact not to leave during those times. Even if that meant starving to death. It was all part of our "Best Friend Code". It was required for us to spend those two days there, but we would spend over half the summer sleeping over there anyways.

"Just let me get my bags." I told him. I raced to my doorstep and grabbed my suitcase with my clothes, my suitcase that held a TON of food, and my bag of drinks that I would put in the treehouse fridge when we got there. I out them in the back of his 2012 black Mustang convertible.

"I think this summer will be different." He stated after he put his bags in the trunk and climbed in the car.

"What do you mean?" I asked him. He smirked and started the car.

"It's a surprise. It's your eighteenth birthday Av. We have to do something fun!" He said. My birthday was on the first day of summer.

"Ok ok whatever Aids." I laughed. He glared at me.

"I told you not to call me that Av." He stated making me laugh more. He rolled the top down on the car and started driving. "Party In The USA" by Miley Cyrus blasted through the speakers.

"So I put my hands up they're playin my song the butterflies fly away!" I sang loudly. "Noddin my head like yeah! Movin my hips like yeah!" I continued as I nodded my head and attempted to sway. He laughed so hard I thought he would crash.

"We're here sunshine." He told me. I glared daggers at him.

"Don't call me that." I hissed.

"Too bad sunshine." He chuckled.

"Ugh." I growled and got out of the car.

We hiked up the forest covered mountain until we saw the treehouse. The outside was covered in moss and leaves, which we did a few years ago to keep it hidden. We undid the ladder and went up the hatch into the house.
