Just before supper, I heard the doorbell ring.
"Snow! Can you get the door?" my dad called from the kitchen.
I smiled knowing who it was. Getting up, I sprinted to the door and threw it open. "Janelle!" I exclaimed as I threw my arms around her in a hug. She's the closest thing to a mom I've ever had.
"Hi Snow." she smiled, hugging me back. "Where's your dad?"
"In the kitchen, finishing whatever he's making." I answered as Janelle shrugged off her jacket and took off her boots.
"I should've guessed." she said with a smile and walked towards the kitchen.
I followed after her, and walked in just in time to see her greet my dad with a kiss...gross...
"Anything you need help with, Dale?" retrieving plates from the cupboard as she asked.
I grabbed glasses as my dad replied, "Not as of the moment." He brought the pan that was on the stove over to the table.
"What's for food?" I asked like I did every day.
"Hamburger - macaroni hot dish." he replied as I silently cheered. My favorite meal ever.
"Sounds great." Janelle smiled and we all sat down and began to eat.
"How was school for you today, Snow?" Both of them asked in sync before they burst out laughing.
I smiled. "It was alright. For high school, it could've been way worse."
My dad smirked. "That's good to hear. How was work, Janelle?"
She rolled her eyes. "You were there! You know how stressful today was. More people than we knew what to do with."
Dad and I both cracked up laughing. "I know, I know."
I couldn't help but continue smiling. This is what a real family was supposed to be like. Laughing, smiling, talking and supporting each other. That's what I wish I had. And now I have it.
After supper, Janelle suggested that we played a game. Man, she brings joy to everyone. I swear she does.
We ended up playing Apples to Apples. And we laughed until our sides hurt.
Janelle left a few hours after she arrived, but the hours only felt like minutes.
I started getting ready for bed, when I was brushing my teeth, my dad was standing in the doorway.
"Can I ask you something?" he said putting his hands in his pocket.
I nodded, this was odd.
"I was wondering if you were okay with me proposing to Janelle."
I choked on my toothpaste.
"You're more important to me than she is. So I won't if you don't want me to."
I spat out my toothpaste into the sink and smiled. "Dad, are you kidding? Yes!" She's the mother figure I've always wanted in my life. That's the one wish I've always asked since a young age.
He pulled me into a hug and I couldn't resist hugging back. That was all I ever wished for.
