'Are you sure about this, Jim?' Bones said irritably as he and the infamous Jim Kirk walked towards the transporter room, where Spock was meeting them. Scotty had reported the transporter was experiencing a few "minor" malfunctions, minor being an understatement; there was a distinct chance that Jim and Spock's atoms would be scattered all over the galaxy.
'For the last time, Bones, it'll be fine! Stop worrying like a mother hen,' Jim laughed, clapping him on the back as Bones' expression turned stony.
'Remind me again exactly why you're beaming down.'
'Ummmm... Oh yeah, something about seeing if the research team down there are still alive or something.'
'Well, I ain't touching that transporter until it's fixed.'
'Ok, scaredy cat.' Bones gave him a hard punch on the arm as they walked into the transporter room. Jim squealed and jumped away, rubbing his arm.
'There's a hypo in sickbay with your name on it. It may or may not relieve the pain,' he threatened. Jim's eyes grew wide and he scurried onto the transporter pad just as Spock walked in.
'Gentlemen, I hope you have not been fighting.' He rebuked, as he looked from the cowering Jim to McCoy, who had fire in his eyes. When he got no answer, he raised an eyebrow and stepped onto the transporter pad next to Jim. 'Energise.' The last thing they saw was the redshirt's confused face before the transporter beams engulfed them.
The young ensign manning the transporter was panicking. An unusual energy disturbance was flagging up and without the transporter, the captain and Commander Spock would be stuck on the planet.
'What's up, ensign?' Bones asked, studying the young man's face.
'The transporter's malfunctioning.'
'Well, what are you waiting for? Beam them up!!' Bones shouted, leaning over and pressing a few buttons. The glittery effect of the transporter appeared, but vanished after a few seconds. Frustrated, he tried again. This time it worked, but the shapes seemed much to small... Once the beams had disappeared, Bones gasped and clutched onto the side of the unit. Before him stood a small sandy-haired boy and an increasedly bewildered young Vulcan, both in over-sized Starfleet shirts and about 3 years old. Bones scraped up the courage to walk over to the human child, crouch down and say: 'Hey little guy. I'm Doctor Leonard McCoy, but you can call me Bones. What's your name?'
'My name is James Tibewius Kiwk, but evewyone calls me Jim.' The young boy lisped, backing away from him. 'Are you Fwank?'
'No, Jimmy.' Bones said. Jim cautiously moved forward and let Bones pick him up, still wrapped in the yellow shirt. 'And who might you be?'
'I am S'chn T'gai Spock, son of Sarek.' He said in as monotone as a 3 year old's voice could get. Fear swelled in his chocolate brown eyes and he backed away when Bones moved forward to pick him up. 'I can walk.'
Bones decided to go ahead with explaining where they were.
'You two are on the USS Enterprise. The current captian is Montgomery Scott, as our usual captian and first officer are taking a, um, a short break. I'm gonna take you to the bridge, ok?' Jim had got bored halfway through and was tugging at Bones' ear. 'Cut it out, Jim!'
'Sowwy,' Jim apologised, tears forming in his eyes.
'Crying is illogical.' Spock muttered, raising an eyebrow; a skill he had apparently mastered since birth.
'You'we illogical.' Jim bawled, beginning to cry. Loudly.
'Jim, please! Don't cry!!' Bones begged. It didn't work; Jim just cried louder. 'If you stop crying, I'll let you sit in the captain's chair!' That shut him up, and he looked up at Bones hopefully.
'Weally?'
'Really.' With that, they walked from the transporter room to the bridge, receiving some very strange looks from the crew; after all, it was the CMO carrying a small child draped in a yellow shirt with a Vulcan child following, a blue shirt trailing behind him like a dress. When they walked onto the bridge, it took all the crew had to stop from bursting out laughing.
'Who are these wee laddies?' Scotty asked, swivelling round to look at the disgruntled Bones.
'This is going to sound ridiculous, but the transporter seriously malfunctioned,' Scotty gasped, 'so we had to beam the captain and Spock up immediately. They seemed to have de-aged to 3-year-olds.' Bones explained, keeping a firm hold on the scrabbling Jim. 'And... I promised Jim he could sit in the chair.' Scotty laughed, pressing a few buttons which made the chair inoperable and got up. Bones reluctantly placed Jim on the chair, who instantly squealed with delight.
'Reminds me a bit of when Johanna was little.' Bones sighed wistfully to Scotty, leaning on the doorframe.
'Who's Johanna?'
'My daughter from my ex-wife.' Bones said, looking over to the science station where he saw Spock standing on the chair. 'Spock, get down from there!!' He shouted, lunging foward and grabbing him just as he was about to press something. Spock looked rather annoyed.
'Why?' He asked. Scotty started laughing under his breath.
'Because I told you to!'
'That answer is illogical. I require a logical answer, please.'
'Well, I'm afraid that's the most logical answer you're getting.' Bones said, picking up the angry Vulcan. Spock bravely attempted a Vulcan nerve pinch, but as he was only 3 years old it did not have the desired effect. 'OW!!!' Bones yelled, clipping the boy round the ear. Spock's bottom lip began to wobble and his eyes brimmed with tears as Bones put him down and warned him not to do it again. Halfway through the stern talk, McCoy was sidetracked by Jim talking in (what was supposed to be) an authoritive voice.
'Attention cwew of the Entewpwise, this is youw captain speaking. Thewe will be an ice cweam festival tonight at 8:30.' Things continued in this manner until everyone on the bridge was watching their 3 year old captain make ridiculous festivals and events. 'Kiwk out.' Looking after the world's 2 most annoying toddlers was going to be tough, but the crew was up to it. They always are.
