I descend the stairs in front of our house to the silver Volvo where my siblings, Alice, Rosalie, Jasper, and Emmett were waiting. I had a quarter left in my junior year at Forks High School. It had been uneventful for the beginning of the year, but I couldn't help to think that something somewhat interesting might happen in the small town of Forks. A werewolf outbreak, newborn spree, or even a shortage in animals for that matter. I guess I put my boredom upon myself. My family had invited me to go hunting with them, but I quickly declined.

Ever since Alice and Jasper joined us I haven't felt the same. I was the only one in our coven without a mate. Carlisle had Esme, Rosalie had Emmett, and Jasper had Alice. Then there was me. I hadn't found someone I couldn't live without. Someone I could love unconditionally. So, recently I've been shutting myself out. Only leaving our house for school and hunting (only if necessary).

The fog was great today, allowing me to wear a t-shirt without fear of the sun illuminating my skin's tiny diamond-like facets. The weather in Forks, Washington is always this way. Gloomy. Wet. It's almost always raining and when it isn't raining it's snowing.

We arrive at the school just in enough time to get to first hour. There was an old red pick-up truck in the parking lot today. We must have gotten a new student today. That or someone traded in their car. Highly unlikely. Just sitting in the Volvo I could hear so many thoughts. I have heard them enough to learn to tune them out, but today the thoughts intrigued me.  A big commotion about the new girl. "She's so hot, but there's no way I would be able to get with her," came from majority of the guys and the girls were mainly filled with envy, unable to wait till lunch when they could talked about her to her friends. From what I was hearing her name is Bella Swan. She came all the way from Phoenix, Arizona. Which makes no sense because who would want to leave the sun for dreary Forks?

The first three periods of the day passed by in a blur. It mainly consisted of work I already had learned and knew how to do without thinking, listening to people continuously think about Bella and her life now, and the terrible thirst I had. Sitting in second period, my longing for blood had become increasingly worse. Nothing I hadn't handled before, but still dreadfully uncomfortable. I knew missing that hunting trip over the weekend had been a mistake.

My siblings and I strolled up to the glass cafeteria doors. Rosalie and Emmett entering first followed by Alice and Jasper. I had been looking forward to this period all day. I was fully prepared to read the new girl's thoughts and figure out why she was here. Who she had on her mind. Whether the rumors about her beauty were true. I sat down at the table in the back corner of the lunch room like always with my family surrounding me, and immediately started scanning. She was sitting at a table with a couple of girls I didn't know and a guy I had a class with. I had her focused in my vision, everyone else tuned out, but her thoughts weren't coming. I could only hear the sound of my instinctive breathing.

"Jasper.....I'm confused," I confessed.

"What is it Edward? A subject finally got you stumbled up?" he said with a bit of sarcasm.

"No, it's the new girl....I...I can't hear her thoughts. I can't hear anything coming from her at all!"

"No need to worry my brother. She's probably just out of range," he responded comfortingly. I could hear the worry in his tone though.

It was extremely frustrating not being able to understand her. I couldn't focus on anything else other than the unavailability of her head.  I found myself staring at her the entire lunch period, even when she caught me looking at her unblinkingly. She didn't seem too afraid of my pitch black eyes. If anything she was interested.

I got up and bolted out of the cafeteria as soon as the bell rang for fourth period. I couldn't stand the irritation of not being able to hear what she thought of the strange guy with dark eyes. I slumped down into the stool set at the lab station in my biology class. "Finally," i thought, "I got away from the one person whose mind I can't read." And I must've spoke too soon cause in she strolled. Her dark brown hair flowing down her back. Her light pale skin seeming illuminated in the light of the classroom. She had walked in with one of the girls from her lunch table who's, from her thoughts, name was Angela. As her companion walked to the back of the class to her lab partner Bella waltzed up the center aisle to the teacher. That's when it hit me.
