I sat in my room on the black leather sofa, watching the sun come up. It had snowed during the night and there was a thin layer coating everything. With the rain that had come a few days before the snow glistened with the fine layer of ice. I pulled myself from my daze and began getting ready for school. With the thought of school also came endless thoughts of Bella. What would she be wearing? Would she try and hide her endless blushing when I'd catch her staring at lunch? And most prominently, would I be able to read her mind today? I assumed not, simply because of the fact I haven't been able to before, but there was always that hope in the back of my mind. I bounded down the stairs where my siblings were waiting by the door. I always took the longest to get ready.
"About time you got down here!" Alice teased.
"Swooning over Bella I presume," Rosalie chimed.
"Will you guys cut it out!" I snapped back at them.
I had been coming up with ways to cut off my friendship I was developing with Bella before I hurt her. I was bound to eventually wasn't I? I was going to end up hurting her one day when I was thirsty and couldn't control myself. I drove the group to school and climbed out of the Volvo. I turned to check and see if Bella's truck was parked where it normally is and it was. I began to smile when I saw everything unravel before me. Her turning to head into the school, the loud screech of Tyler's van turning as it slipped and slid on the ice on the parking lot, and the van heading straight for Bella. Without even thinking I darted for her. I threw us out of the way of the car with my hands pinning her down. But the van kept coming.
"Jesus Christ," I said out loud as I extended both of my hands out to stop the car.
The van stopped about a foot from Bella's face, and I let out a sigh of relief. I had saved her. She wasn't hurt, or at least not as hurt as she would've been if I hadn't stepped in. The car on the other had, didn't look too good. When I had shot my hands out the metal had bent in and you could prominently see the hand prints I had made. Rosalie was not going to let me hear the end of that. Everyone in the parking lot had seen me stop the car with my bare hands and push Bella out of the way in a matter of seconds. She didn't even have time to shut her eyes when I got to her to shove her out of the way. I then noticed her legs were under the van. In a blur I lifted the car and twisted her around so she was no longer in harms way where the van was involved. It was dead silent for a few seconds, and then the screaming started. Everyone was trying to get to Bella and shouting if she was okay, but I had to know before any of them.
"Bella? Are you alright?" I asked her frantically.
I quickly drew her to my chest. Immediately feeling better now that she was in my arms. She began trying to sit up when she answered, "I'm fine."
I held her tightly as she struggled to sit up. I knew from Carlisle that after a drastic head injury not to sit up too quickly.
"Be careful," I warned as she continued to struggle. "I think you hit your head pretty hard."
"Ow," Bella said as she reached up and touched above her left ear.
It took every ounce of my being not to laugh at her. How could one person be this accident prone. It was like she was a magnet and danger and harm just came at her from all directions!
"That's what I thought," I said with a slight giggle.
"How in the. . . ." she looked up at me with a stunned expression panned across her face. "How did you get over here so fast?"
That's when I began to panic. I hadn't thought what I was going to say to her when she asked how I saved her life. Why couldn't humans just be appreciative and move on?
