"Why did she have to go?" Sophie asked, her brown hair dangling in a bun as she looked to father with pleading eyes.
"It's nature," He said in his quiet voice. An emotionless smile printed on his face, "We don't question plants and they grow beautifully. Some have to die so others can flourish."
Sophie looked to the ground her eyes splitting tears as she had her hand around my arm.
"You miss her too, right Zayn?" Sophie said her Hazel brown eyes red.
"I do. I'll always miss mama," I said patting her head lightly but all I could hear was the pushed back sniffles that escaped her.
With the sleeve of the coat she wiped away her tears. Another spurt of sniffles absorbed in the windy air. Father stood up planting his hand on my shoulders pushing us back into the log cabin. I could see all the people who's tears hadn't stopped like Sophie's. Why couldn't I cry? I loved mama and she never favored one twin over the other. So why at this moment could I not shed a single tear.
In the warmth of the log cabin I watched the graying sky. In spite of the depressing day my eyes still focused on the stars that I could've never have seen in the light of city. Mama would be happy with this. To rest under the stars for eternity.
A soft tug on my sleeve awoke me from my thoughts.
"How can you be so calm?" Sophie clambered and I didn't know how to answer.
"I've cried my share before this," I said and thought about sitting next to her in the hospital. "Don't worry things get better. You've been there next to me the whole time."
She nodded slightly, "I'll be by your side rooting for you."
"And I to you."
Present!
"Fuck!" Sophie yelled throwing on a flannel on top of her school uniform. "You honestly shouldn't have waited for me you dingus! Let's go we're going to be late for the last first day of school."
I rolled my eyes as we ran down the steps of the apartment building. Truthfully I wasn't running rather than going at a slightly fast walk. However I could tell Sophie was trying to run. This was a daily for us. Sophie's misconception of time was amazing. If I were to actually be late waiting for her I'd leave before it could happen.
"Last first day of school," I mumbled. "Does that make any sense to you?"
"Of course it does," She said as if it were the most obvious thing anyone could know.I glanced at the houses, the fresh dew of morning glazed the grass of people's houses. The drastic change of apartments to houses was noticeable, though I doubt anyone pointed it out. Without much trouble we made it to school. The flag was swiping through the air from the soft breeze echoing around us. Students were making there way up the steps in the formal cliques.
"It looks like a white and blue blob with these ugly uniforms!" Sophie yelled to me and I felt a chuckle escape me.
"Well you're going to be part of the blob soon. Be free dear child, be free!" I laughed and she crossed her arms.
"Hmmm, well! You going to sign up for the school play like last year? You made a good Tybalt," She taunted.
"And I wanted to be Romeo," I sighed jokingly.
"Nah, you wanted to be Juliet." She winked and I rolled my eyes.
"Very funny, ha ha." I countered sarcastically and she shrugged it off walking into the school.
The loud chatter of people around us vibrated the room. We climbed up the stairs to the second floor. Not many lockers were up here so people didn't occupy the space. However us as the lucky loners we are got a spot of the 37 that were up here. Sophie opened her locker beginning to tape in comic strips she printed online into her locker.
"You're just gunna mess them up like last year. Can't you be organized?" I tell her and she rolls her eyes chuckling.
"This why I don't use real comic strips! Plus if I'm organized I'm late, pick one man! Unorganized or late, pick the better of two evils sir." She said throwing in her chemistry book and math book.
"You're hopeless." I mutter and she shakes her head.
"Think you're looking for hopeful! Because my twin I will make this the best year of high school for you." She claims punching the air excitedly.
"Doubt it. You said that last year and all we did was go to six flags." I said closing my locker and leaning on it, the scoff of my shoe running a chill along my spine.
"But you see this year I have more willpower and sleep deprivation! So you know what that means?" She says excitedly and I already knew the answer.
"Extra coffee," I mutter and she nods.
"Extra Coffee!" She yells, I look to my side to see the two Jaydens walking over.
One spelled their name Jayden the other Jaiden, to be honest it was really confusing and Sophie only referred to them by their hair color. Jaiden was a brunette with round glasses prompted on her face, she had more fair skin then Jayden. Jayden unlike Jaiden had short blonde hair and bright blue eyes, opposing Jaiden's brown. See confusing.
"Sophie last year you crashed on coffee in class. So no," Jayden (Blonde) said and the other Jaiden (brunette) nodded pushing her glasses up.
"Awww you guys are the worst." Sophie whinned, Jaiden (brunette) crossed her arms and pat Sophie's shoulder.
"No one cares." She muttered and I couldn't help but laugh.
Through the laughter a loud crash erupted through the room. We looked over to the cause. It looked as though the trashcan had be thrown to the side, the contents spilling out. A girl and a boy faced each other. The boy grumbled angrily, he huffed annoyed before walking away. Before I knew it Sophie had run over ready to know what happened.
"What happened?" Sophie asked and the girl shook a weary hand dismissing the whole thing.
"Don't worry about it. My brother can be an asshole," She smiled.
Sophie looked taken back slightly.
"Your brother?" Jayden (Blonde) was astonished. "I mean I hate my brother but I think this was a little far. I am trash, so he basically just kicked me."
"Seriously like I said an asshole! Come on, I'm just as much anime trash as anyone." She laughed and Sophie's eyes sparkled.
Before I knew it they were all talking about anime and me being not the anime expert I slowly walked away. I walked through the halls trying to give myself time to think. I shoved my hands in my pockets as I walked around a bit. I turned a corner to see the boy from before. Although this time he was sitting on a bench near an exit to the balcony outside. He had plopped headphones on probably trying to tune out the world.
I don't know what urged me to walk over but I did. My feet were hesitant but they still moved and my heart was racing. I sat next to him and in response he took off his headphones.
"Did Thea send you after me?" He grumbled and I shook my head. "Okay, then what do you want."
"Well my friend was asking why you kicked her," I told him and he rolled his eyes.
"I kicked a trashcan not a girl today." He stated, his tone sounded as though he wasn't opposed to doing either. "So what's your name?"
"Zayn, you?" I asked and he sighed slumping down.
"Xavier." He mumbled but I caught the words.
Soon a tension filled silence filled the room as I examined everything around it. Refusing to make eye contact, he had been looking out the window. I noticed a small stain on his shirt probably from the spill he did to the trashcan.
"You have a stain," I muttered without thinking.
