The Dress

For one last time i looked at myself in the mirror. What would they think? What would he think? One thing was for sure: my parents would freak out. I just want to be normal. But was a bright yellow dress after 18 years of wearing black and dark blue "normal" enough? Okay Wednesday, you're fine. Just go downstairs and say hi to everybody. Which is what i did. As soon as i came downstairs i saw my mother standing in front of Lucas. Lucas... my God i've missed him! I had to say something... Then i heard my mother telling that stupid story of cousin Itt again.
"Thank you, mother!"
All eyes were staring at me. I could even feel the ancestors looking at me. The dress. Too late i couldn't turn back now.
"What are you wearing?", my mother asked.
"A dress.", i replied, as i walked down the stairs.
"Paloma*, what happend? You look like a crime scene!". Both my parent freaked out. I knew they would.
"I won't have that color in my house."
"Mum, i'm just trying to be normal okay.", i said to her, hoping the others couldn't hear me.
"Darling we don't wear bright colors. Bright colors are for people with no inner life and no imagination."
That was the last thing i heard her saying. I stepped forward to the Beinekes. I didn't even introduce myself. Good start Wednesday, good start...
"Hi, i'm Wednesday. Nice to meet you." A kind looking lady smiled at me and said her name was Alice. The man next to her (boy, was he grumpy) told me his name was Mal.
So these were his parents. Wait, where was Lucas? Five minutes ago he stood next to my mum. Oh no, don't tell me he didn't die already. We weren't even married yet.
I looked around and i saw Lucas talking to my dad. My dad saw me and finished his last line before he grabbed Lucas at his shoulders, turned him around till he stood in front of me and said: "Have you met my daughter? This is Wednesday, the best thing that might ever happen to you. Don't. Screw. It. Up." While walking away my dad looked one more time at the bright yellow dress i was wearing and shook his head. He spoke to all the adults so no one would notice Lucas and me. Thanks dad. Now just act normal.
"I almost didn't reconize you."
"I can say the same about you! I mean, since when do you wear a suit?"
"And since when do you wear a bright color, my Diana?"
"Stop calling me that, i hate it."
"That's why i continue." He looked over my head to make sure out parents weren't watching and gave me a quick kiss. When i was able to look at him again i smiled like crazy. Knowing we would spend the rest of our lifes together. I was sure we would get married as soon as we could. Just to escape from our past lifes and our crazy family.
"Children, you're excused.", my mother suddenly said. I grabbed his hand ran toward the stairs. "Dad, remember!", i said when i we ran into my dad. "Don't worry Paloma, we'll take good care of them." I looked at Lucas and saw he was thinking the same as me, of course they won't. But they'd try if they had to. And now they did.
As soon as we were halfway the stairs i heard Mal saying; "Leave the door open, you hear!". "Don't worry my friend," my father replied. "Wednesday has a black belt in Taekwondo. He tries anything, she'll kick him knock-out! To the children." They all raised their glass, like nothing happend.
"Would you?", i heard Lucas saying.
"Would i what?"
"Kick me knock-out?".
"I will, if you call me Diana The Huntress one more time."
"Okay Princess of Darkness.", he said with a big smile.
"Don't call me like that either. You're lucky i haven't killed you yet."
"You wouldn't. And you now why?"
"Why?"
"Because you love me."
"And because i hate you."
"Same thing."
We walked through the house while holding hands. Our parents were still downstairs so no one would bother us. Still, there was Pugsley. And Grandma. Even Lurch and uncle Fester could see us. I wanted to be sure we could be alone for a moment.
"Come with me.", i said.
"Where are we going?", Lucas asked.
"My room."
"You're sure?"
"Yes. I have too many other family members in this house who might sneak around. You will meet them at dinner."
Once inside, the 7 o'clock alarm went off. Seven o'clock, the magic hour, my mum would say**.
"Lucas?"
"Yes?"
"Did you miss me?"
"Of course!"
"Prove it." He turned around a looked right at me.
"I missed you so much, my brain was bleeding. I dreamed that i had wings and you were the sun and i flew too lose and you melted my wings."
Lucas was realy good at writing poems. From the most romantic and darkest to the average things in life. Every time he told me one, his words felt like everything i needed to survive. They made me look at things in a different way. They brought us together. Those words made me happy. Still i couldn't show it how much i wanted to act like him. Be more romantic and less creepy. Although i knew he liked my dark side. I tried to continue his poems every time. Still it never was what i wanted.
"And then we died and everthing was empty and black?"
"How did you know?"
"I know everything."

*Gomez calls his daughter paloma and pigeon. Paloma is Spanish for pigeon.
