Music.All I hear is music.
A beautiful sound rings through my ears and I can feel a huge smile spread across my face.
"Your not paying attention!" Esperanza laughs jokingly as she punches me in the arm. But I can't help but smile. I've never heard a laugh like hers. Especially not in such circumstances.
"Okay. I'm sorry. Sing that line again." She rolls her eyes at me but nods.
"oh de-" Esperanza was abruptly interrupted as the room door swung open and in walked the lady from last night. Esperanza scoots to the back of the bed like a little kid and I bite my lip, scared of what the lady might do. But all she does is smile.
"I see you guys have become acquainted." She says as she walks closer to the bed. "Is that what you are here to do? Make friends?" I know it's a rhetorical question but for some reason my mouth decided to defy me.
"No, of course not." I spit sarcastically. I mentally slap myself in the face. I'm so used to answering my friend's and even my parent's rhetorical questions with a sarcastic remark that its become an automatic response.
She storms over to me and grabs me by my hair, slinging me to the ground. I gasp in shock and wince from the pain where her hand just was. She crouched down to me and I immediately smell cigarettes on her breathe.
"Look smart one. That kind of behavior is not tolerated in this house. You do that again and I'll have no hesitation to punish you. Now. Breakfast starts soon okay. Get ready please." And with that she walks away. I touch the right side of my face and I'm eyebrow is bleeding.
Esperanza rushes to my side, a sad smile on her face.
"I'll get you cleaned up." She says as she helps me up into the bathroom.

I gasp at how big the house is. We've been walking for what seems like ten minutes and still haven't come across the kitchen yet. But the house is beautiful. There are drawings and paintings along the walls and golden and silver chandeliers hang from the ceilings. The walls are a beige color and the floor underneath us is marble tiles. I continue to admire the house until the smell of food snaps me out of my trance.
We walk into a dining room and there is food lining the table. Waffles covered in whipped cream, pancakes dripping with Nutella; I nearly melt under the sight of all this food. I notice that there are other chairs around the table. My eyes widen.
"Are there other kids he-" I'm cut off as my question is answered for me. A pair of twins walk in . Following them Carol walks into the dining room with a genuine smile on her face.
"Eat." She says, then starts to walk away. "Introduce yourselves." With that she is gone.
I bite my lip and look around the table.
"I-I'm Cleo and this is Theo. We're eleven." A small girl says. She has big brown eyes and long dark brown hair. Her brother gives a small smile and goes on eating.
"She- she kidnap-" I'm immediately cut off by Cleo.
"No. She's our mother." I gasp, loudly. I didn't know how to react or what to say. How could a parent do such things, having kids and- I couldn't even begin to piece my thoughts together. The rest of breakfast is silent and tension fills the room. So thick, a knife would be merely impossible to cut it with. Once the twins are finished, they quickly leave the table. Leaving just me and Esperanza. I look over at her and she's slightly shaking. I furrow my brow and place a hand on her shoulder. She looks at me and smiles.
