I wake up and yawn as the sun streams through my bedroom window. 'Today is Monday. Liah and I went to a movie yesterday for my birthday. I haven't seen Ashlinn since Friday, so I begin to wonder if she's still mad at me. I get ready for school, brushing out my brown wavy hair and getting dressed. Then, I start walking up the hill to school. I walk into the doors at school and wave at Ashlinn when I see her in line. She looks at me and turns away, rolling her eyes.
I get over to her in the line. "Ashlinn?" I say. She stares straight ahead, ignoring me. I shrink and sulk to the back of the line. I fight back the tears stinging at my eyes. How could she be mad at me? Liah is my best friend and it's my birthday, I get to choose who I invite.
Liah walks into the gym and comes to sit by me. "Where's Ashlinn?" she asks me, trying to see up in the front of the line. "She's mad at me," I say with a frown.
"Well, that's her loss. You have me and she has... no one really," Liah states. I snif and nod. "I just don't understand why she is even mad at me!" I say, my voice shaking and my lip trembling. She reassures me that it's okay again and we line up to go into the classroom. Luckily, Ashlinn sits across the room from me, so I won't have to talk to her.
I sit through math and science subjects until it is finally lunchtime. I sit next to Liah at a seperate table with Gio and another friend, Mason. I steal a glance at Ashlinn, who is sitting with her so-called friend Maya. She glares back at me and I look down at my peanut butter sandwich. I take a bite even though I've lost my appetite and run out to recess with Liah and Gio. Gio goes off to play basketball with his friends so me and Liah mill about the playground. As we come to the end of the playground near the hill, Ashlinn walks over to us. I bite my lip as she opens her mouth.
"Why didn't I get invited to your birthday, Reagan?" She stares back at me, waiting for an answer. I look her in the eyes and tell her my answer.
"My mom doesn't know your parents, so she couldn't communicate with them. Plus, I could only bring one friend," I say, "If I could invite more friends, you'd be at the top of the list."
She looks at me and then half smiles. "Alright," she says, "Sorry that I overreacted,"
I nod and accept her apology while Liah stands there and watches us. Ashlinn turns towards Liah. "You guys wanna go and play chase with Gio and Kendall?" she says excitedly. We both nod and sprint over to the basketball court.
It feels good to know that she won't be mad at me or hurt me, and that I have regained a friend.
