Renora - 1st commission. rogue-sama

"Stay quiet Ren, We'll get you when it's safe.. I love you, my son."

Ren sat in fear as he heard the screams. He had been hiding behind a desk as his parents had told him to do when the grimm invaded their village. He heard a loud scream and a body falling to the ground, he heard another scream and a sword being drawn, a loud howl and then a cry of pain as another body fell to the ground. Ren sat shaking, crying his parents names and clutching tight to a small toy sloth, it had been a gift from his mother just a few weeks before the attack. Ren heard movement behind the table, loud snuffling and grunts before he saw a shadow looming over his hiding spot, he looked up just in time to see two glowing red eyes staring at him before the creature whined in pain and fell to the ground in front of him, slowly turning to smoke at his feet. "Check behind the table, I think the grimm could smell something." said a deep gruff voice. foot steps and a small creak as a figure leaned down and looked at Ren, "Oh no." said a soft voice, a huntress with dark black hair and red tips looked down at the boy with sorrow, her shining silver eyes filled with grief, "Qrow theres another one." 
he heard a sigh and more foot steps, a man with a long red cape and dark hair slicked back looked down at him, "We best get her to safety." he whispered loud enough for Ren to hear. Ren squeaked out through a quiet sob, "I-.. I'm a boy."
The woman lightly smacked the mans leg and he huffed, "How was I supposed to know?" he gestured to Rens hair, "I see long hair I think 'girl.' not my fault." 
The woman who was still unnamed to him reached a hand out to him with a kind smile, "Hello.. I'm Summer." she lightly pushed the hair out of his face before Ren shot out from his spot and into her arms. Summer sighed and held him close, "He didn't mean to be so rude. He means the best, trust me." her hand kept petting his hair in a protective way. The last thing Ren remembered before he fell asleep in the huntresses arms was the blurry sight of two bodies laying on the ground before everything went black.

Ren awoke in a brightly lit room, he heard a faint snore beside him and quickly looked over, hoping this it had all been a dream and his mother was right beside him but sleeping on the chair beside his bed was the huntress from before, her hair was a mess and her face had a large bandaid on it, but her sleeping face showed no pain and she slept on. Ren looked around the room, he seemed to be in a hospital bed, he was wearing a light blue hospital gown and his sloth was on the table beside his bed. Ren quickly snatched up the sloth and held it tight to his chest, quietly weeping. he heard the door of the room open and a nurse walked in, the sound startled the huntress and she fell off her chair. 
"I see the boy is awake." the nurse smiled at him, "Hello- whats your name?" 
Ren stayed quiet and looked down at his sloth, he messed with the long fur on the toy till the fur was parted into the word, "Ren." 
He held up the toy to the nurse and she chuckled, "Ren is it? thats a lovely name." the nurse then turned to the huntress, "Qrow is waiting for you outside, he said its time to head out." 
Summer nodded and the nurse left after sending one last smile at Ren. Summer stood up and smiled at Ren, "Hey kid, I'm gonna need you to be strong okay?" he placed a hand on his shoulder gently, "You're stronger than you know, and no matter what, never stop moving forwards." she placed a kiss on is forehead before the turned and left the room, leaving Ren alone with nothing but his thoughts and Sloth. 

Days passed, no one could get a word out of Ren. Finally word came that his parents had died that night, leaving Ren an orphan. The hospital decided the best choice of action was to send him to an orphanage. 

Ren had gotten settled into his shared room, his roommates tried talking to him but Ren still refused to say a word, they eventually gave up and left Ren alone. Ren looked around the cluttered room and sighed, he was raised to be neat and this new arrangement was making him very uneasy, he stood up and left the room before he took it upon himself to clean the rather large mess, he made his way through the building and out into the backyard, outside there was a small playground and a big tree, Ren looked up at the tree and smiled, his father had taught him how to climb trees, Ren then felt a sob coming and he forced it down, taking a deep breath and taking a seat under the tree, it was a hot day and the shade was quite nice. 
After a few moments he heard movements above him and jumped, looking up just in time to see an orange blur falling onto his lap, Ren grunted in pain before he heard a small giggle, "S-Sorry friend." said a small squeaky voice, two happy blue eyes looked up at him, Ren looked down at the messy human on his lap and let out a small chuckle, it was a young girl about his age, a freckled face and a few cuts on her cheek and well, everywhere. she was wearing pink overalls and pink boots that matched. The overalls were covered in patches and paint, it was obvious that she had the the legs so they were shorts. The girl smiled up at him, she was missing a few teeth but she was still adorable in his eyes. "Hello~" she poked his nose, "I'm Nora! I noticed you were alone and decided to be your friend." she sat up but stayed on his lap, "Whats your name?" 
Nora coughed and looked down, he drew his name into his sloth but Nora pushed his hands  back, "You don't have to be shy." she smiled, "Be as loud as your want! There arent any adults around so we can scream as much as we'd like." 
Ren shook his head and mumbled quietly, "I have to- my mom.." he took a deep breath and looked up into her intense gaze, "I'm.. Ren.. Lie Ren." 
Nora smiled warmly at him, "Thats a nice name. My full name is Nora Valkyrie." she took his hand, "It's nice to meet you Renny." she looked down at the sloth, "Whats his name?" she asked curiously, "it's really cute."
Ren held up the toy for her to see, "Well.. It got kinda squished when my dad fell asleep on it once.. so I named him Pancake.." he replied, already feeling safe and happy in her presence.
Nora reached out and pet it, "I love pancakes! and its so soft. You're really lucky to have such a nice gift left from your parents. All I got was my fabulous good looks." she puffed up her chest and flipped her short hair, getting a laugh out of Ren and sending a small dusting of pink across his cheeks. "Hey Ren I know we just met.. but do you wanna share a room with me? All the other kids dont like me cause I'm weird and it's kinda lonely for me."
Ren didnt hesitate before nodding in agreement and smiling joyfully at the bubbly girl on his lap. Nora clapped and stood up, putting a hand out for him, "Come on. Lets go ask somehow who works here! I can't wait to be best best BEST besties with you forever Renny! and Ren.." she pulled him into a tight hug, "I reaaaaaaaaaally like your hair. Can I braid it sometime?" 
Ren laughed then nodded happily and held tight to her soft hand and rested his head on her shoulder.
Nora poked his nose softly and whispered, "Boop."
