Prologue
It was silent. Unusually quiet. My mother and father always spoke on the table. Our meals were always full of lively conversations. My mother fiddled with her food. My father ate in silence. I watched them. I heard them arguing before but I didn't think much of it because they always fought and made up after an hour. I felt something tense in the atmosphere.
"Melanie, we need to talk," my father finally managed to say.
My mother nodded.
I felt better instantly, thinking that he was going to apologize and everything will be alright. Little did I know that in a matter of a five seconds I would be proved wrong.
"I want a divorce. I don't love you anymore. I found someone else," my father said.
My heart stopped. I couldn't breathe. He didn't love her?
"What?" my mother squeaked after what felt like an eternity.
"You heard me. I'm sick of you," my daddy rose from his seat.
I turned to my mother. She looked as if she had been stabbed in the stomach again and again. Tears slipped down her cheeks making my heart clench in pain looking at her. I felt a tear slipping down my cheek as well. I shot up from my seat and glared at my sorry excuse of a father.
"Alex, I don't want you getting involved in this. Go upstairs and pack your stuff. Your coming with me."
That one statement caused a red imprint of my hand on his cheek.
He stared at me as if I'd gone out of my mind. Which I probably had.
"I'm not going anywhere with you. Your a horrible excuse of a husband not to mention a father," my voice shook with rage. He stared at me before looking at my mother who by now had slipped off her chair and was rocking herself crying.
"This is the shit you raised, huh?" he screamed at her,"I want a divorce. I've found a better woman than you who can satisfy me better than you. Your just a little bitch who can't stop clinging to me."
That did it. I was about to hit him again but my mother beat me to it. She stood up in a matter of seconds and had started screaming,"I knew you were cheating on me. I could feel it. You jackass would slip out late at night when you thought I was sleeping and would come back early morning. Well guess what you little shitface, I was awake every night for the past three months waiting for you." While saying all my dads face became paler by the minute.
"You lying bitch! You knew and didn't say anything to me!"
"Why the fuck should I say something? Huh? I always wanted to believe in the best and would think of so many excuses for you but now I understand," my mother yelled at him.
"Now I understand what a slut I married and how she raised her stupid ungrateful child!" my father all but yelled.
"You know what dad," I said with venom dripping out of my voice," get the fuck out of here. I never knew you were this ungrateful and selfish! Just get out. Mom and I never want to see your face again!"
My 'father' looked so taken a back I wanted to laugh.
"You heard her, get out of my house. I don't want to see your face again," my mother screamed with tears running even more wildly down her face. I wanted nothing more than to pick up his glass of wine and throw it at his face.
He finally responded after some thinking,"I'm sending the divorce papers in te mail by next week. I expect to have them back in less than two weeks signed."
With that he walked out of the room and I heard the front door banging.
I turn to my mother who was on the floor again silent sobs leaving her lips. I heart broke and tears silently streamed down my face. I ran to her and sat next to her hugging her. She clutched me with all her might and sobbed. We stayed like that the entire night and only one thought ran through my mind,
'Love doesn't exist because if it did, my father would never have left us for another woman. I always thought my parents were in love because I never saw anyone like them. They looked in love. They said it to each other. Love isn't real.'
(a/n: this is Alex's POV if you haven't guessed and in this she is currently 15 years old)
