I woke up the next morning to the sound of my sister, screaming in my face.

"Wake up! They're coming!" She said, panicky.

I had no idea what the hell was going on, but I got up and followed Melody to the kitchen.

"Melody, what's going on?" I asked. I was getting a little scared.

"They're coming! They're going to bomb the house!"

She pulled me outside. She was headed for the shed. Suddenly, I pulled back.

"What about Mom and Dad?" I said. She wouldn't leave them, right?

"Dad's at work, and Mom's still in there. Now come on!" She said, harshly jerking my hand. She wants to leave Mom behind?

"We can't leave Mom!"

"Yes, we can! She would have wanted us to! If we go back, we'll die!"

"Fine then!" I pulled away and ran back to the house.

"No!" I heard Melody behind me.

I was halfway across the yard, when they began to hit.

I was thrown back as the first wave of bombs hit our house, with Mom still inside.

"No!" I scream, as I fell onto the ground.

I got back up and ran to the house, which was only half there, and half on fire.

I ran in the door, screaming for my mom.

"Mom!"

"Mary. . ." I could have sworn I heard the soft call of my name.

"Mary." There it was again.

The Den!

I ran down the hallway and took a left. A flaming beam collapsed behind me.

I felt the smoke in my lungs as I sucked in the air I could.

I saw my mom. She was on the floor, clutching her throat and gasping for air.

"Mom!" I said in a hoarse voice. I was choking on smoke.

"Go." She weakly choked out.

I ignored her and rushed to her side, helping her up.

"Come on." I choked out.

We went as fast as we could, stumbling over each others feet.

The door was within sight. We were almost out!

But then the second wave of bombs hit.

It blew us forward. We landed hard. I rolled into the wall.

"Mom!" I looked around for her. She had landed right next to the door.

I git up and ran to her.

"Come on! We have to keep moving!" I said.

I grabbed her arm. She wasn't reacting. I checked her pulse, getting scared.

Nope, just unconscious.

I slung her arm around my shoulder and dragged her out. She was heavier than she looked.

"Help." I called, hoping Melody was around and that she heard.

I felt some of the weight come off my shoulders and turned to see Melody.

Together we stumbled off to the forest. As we entered, I looked back at what was left of our house.

Our beloved house! My childhood home! I might have damned it so many times, but I was still sad to see it go.::

As soon as we were deep enough into the forest, I collapsed to the ground. The smoke had filled my lungs. I was so tired.

I felt my eyes closing.

The last thing I was aware of before I blacked out, was Melody saying my name.

I woke up and saw Melody bent over me.

"Mary! Oh thank God you're okay! Help me with Mom!" I got up, feeling hazy and went to my mother's side.

"She won't get up." Melody said, her voice was cracking.

I checked her pulse again. She was fine.

"She'll be alright. I'll be right back." I said.

"You're leaving me alone!?" She said. What a diva.

"You'll be fine." I said, flipping my hand at her.

I walked towards the river. When I got there I went to the log and took out the bucket that I keep there.

I began to hum as I filled the bucket with water. When I was done I trudged back to Melody and Mom.

Our house was gone.

We didn't know what they might do to Dad at work.

We had nothing.

How were we going to live?

I walked up to Mom, and threw the water on her before Melody could stop me.

She woke with a start.

"Why did you do that?" She said, clearly pissed.

"To wake you up." I was smiling, barely holding back from laughing.

She took in deep breaths.

"Aw, look at what you did to Mom." Melody said.

"Eh, she'll get over it." I said, shrugging my shoulders.

Mom shot me a death glare.

"What are we going to do?" Melody said suddenly very serious.

"We need to go to my sister. She lives in a very nice house with plenty of room. She'll let us stay."

Something dawned on me. I realized I couldn't go with them.

"I'm not going." I sighed.

"What! Why?" Melody said.

"Seriously?" my mom said with a tone that said 'give me a break.'

"If I go, I'll be putting you guys in danger again. My life isn't worth that of the whole family." I felt so stupidly dramatic. My mom killed the moment with another look.

"When you stop being such a drama queen, let me know." She said. It was starting to flget me mad.

"I'm serious, I'm leaving." I turned and began to walk.

I felt something on my arm and turned to see Melody.

"Please don't." She said. Her eyes were.filled with remorse.

"I have to. You know we'll all die anyway if I don't!"

She sighed, and let go of my arm.

"Be safe, little sis."

"Mary?" I heard my mom. I looked past Melody to her.

"Yeah?"

"I love you. Don't do anything stupid." She had tears her eyes. I felt mine doing the same.

I ran back and wrapped my arms around her. She put hers around me.

"Goodbye." I said.

"Take care." She said. I could tell she was holding back sobs.

I got back up, turned around, and began to walk.

I never looked back.
