I was right. It was three in the morning and we we’re still cooking. Aunt Mona was in a guest room that she now claimed as hers. And we were staring at the counter tops that were covered with deserts. I had called Gage a few seconds ago and woke him up from a deep sleep apparently. I didn’t care much I was loaded with sugar and dancing around the kitchen in my short shorts and black tank top. I don’t remember changing… all I know is that my clothes were suddenly different.

Gage walked in rubbing his eyes. “Wad-ya wa-” he stopped mid sentence and looked at all the food. “Oh my god you two! Did you try every recipe in the book?!” he took a pastry and stuffed it in his mouth savoring the taste.

I leaned over to Rieley. “He’s pretending its you, ya know.” I say wide eyed and she giggles. Gage glares at me and blushes. I smile “Hey I’m packed full of sugar I don’t even remember when I changed clothes.” I pointed out. He laughed and hugged me. “Thanks for the  room by the way.” I added and hugged him back. “OH! Present!” I ran upstairs and grabbed his present. I grabbed a blanket and slide down the stairs right into the kitchen, and right into someone’s legs. I pushed the present towards Rieley before the body fell on me.

“Really?! You’re gonna try to kill the nurse?” I mumble and push the body off of me. I don’t take a second glance thinking its Gage but when I stand up I pause. Gage and Rieley are looking at me with amused smiles. I look back to the floor. Jaxton. “Now I really don’t feel bad… at ALL.” I raised my eyebrows picking up Gage’s present letting him open it.

I found a brown leather jacket that screamed Gage, well that and it didn’t come in my size. He opened it and grinned. “Thanks cuz!” he said with a grin and put it on.

“No biggie.” I shrugged and heard Jaxton get up.

I had just arrived in town when my dad told me that Mia was back in town. I ran over as fast as I could. I could hear her in the house but Rieley told me to stand in front of the stairs to wait for her. She knew that sugar impaired Mia’s judgment and before I could respond she came high speed down the stairs, colliding with my legs. I fell on top of her. She wiggled out from under me and said something about killing… I couldn’t take my eyes off of her.  Her hair was pulled back and her shorts and tank top fitted her body so well…

‘Mine…’ my inner wolf growled. I was still shocked.

‘Ours…’ I said back to it. I felt her heat, I knew she wasn’t a werewolf she shouldn’t feel that. There was something different about her… My dad said something about one in a thousand… She was a shifter. I may not look too smart but looks can be deceiving.

I looked back at Jaxton he was still staring at me with omniscient eyes. I started back at him meeting his eyes. His inner wolf’s voice echoed in my head.

‘I know what you are.’ it said to me my eyes broke the trance and I picked up a small pie and ate it avoiding Jaxton at all costs. Something told me that would be impossible…

Rieley and Gage ended up going home shortly after four in the morning. I guess Rieley was cooking in the morning so she left to get prepared. I was laying on the couch looking out the tall windows to stare at the stars. Jaxton was somewhere… I just didn’t know where. Then again I didn’t care much. He had kept quiet all night. I heard a timer go off as I walked over to the oven and took out another pan of pastries.

I heard a groan from behind me. I glanced towards an armchair to see Jaxton stretching. Great… The timer had woken up the beast.

Glancing at the window I saw the sky start to lighten. I needed a run. And god knows Jaxton would follow me. I eyed him as he mirrored the look. He was thinking what I was. I sighed being defeated. I walked over to him and sighed.

“I’m going for a run… um stay here.” I booked it for the door. I heard chucking behind me and then he took off after me. I made it to the edge of the woods before him. I was barefoot but I leaped and felt my body shifting.

The burning sensation flooded my body. My skin tingled and by the time my paws hit the ground I was a coyote. I could still hear Jaxton behind me knowing he saw what just happened. I didn’t care I kept running, the whole time. I felt Jaxton shift into his werewolf behind me. His heavy paw prints in sync with mine. I pushed all of my feelings away, I couldn’t think of Jax now.

I ran to the lake near our small town. I slowed down and before I knew it Jaxton had me pinned. I glared up at him in wolf form. I sent him a few mental curse words. The silver and green eyes lit up with amusement. I rolled over and laid down facing the lake. Jaxton laid next to me making sure his side was touching mine. When I moved away he moved closer again.

I gave in to his teasing. I laid my head down and eventually fell asleep.

Not much later after I fell asleep I was being nudged.

‘Wake up Mia.’ heard Jaxton’s wolf call to me I put my paw over my snout and felt him lay on me. ‘Come on Mia, you can sleep in your new bed.’ it called out once more. I couldn’t breath so I had to get up. I rolled Jaxton off of me and stretched out.

It was time to head back. I lazily started to walk back, though I was stumbling every few steps and probably looked like a drunk coyote. Jax jogged up to my side and I leant on him as he guided me in the forest.

BANG

I was now wide awake. I could smell the gun power in the air… Hunting season wasn’t for a few more…

BANG

I could see Jaxton on full alert. We took steps at the same time carefully setting our paws down as if the earth would fall out from under us. The gunshots were getting quieter with each step we took and soon enough we were back in town. Jaxton’s dad looked at us as we came through the trees. His eyes were hard and strong. I bowed my head and Jaxton did the same thing.

“Are you two serious? You made me sick with worry! I cant BELIEVE that you two left without telling anyone, what is wrong with you two?!” His face was redder than a radish. I pointed that out in my mind and Jaxton shot me a look. One of those this-so-isn’t-the-time-for-analogy’s look. I hid my snout into my paws as Mr. Redwood continued to rant.

A half hour later he finally let us go with a warning. I shifted and stretched. The legends were wrong about us not shifting with clothes. As long as they were skin tight it was fine. Granted it was less restricting when you were naked but you didn’t have to be in your birthday suit.

I groaned as Jaxton shifted back behind me. I looked at his dad’s retreating figure. “Does he know about the hunter?” I asked not looking at Jaxton.

“I’ll tell him when he gets in check with his wolf.” Jaxton said as he shook his head.

“Hunting season isn’t for another two weeks…”

“There are always early risers. Some like to get a head start… legal or not.” I looked back at Jax and sighed. Without another word I walked towards the Pack House. My room was calling to me.

Jaxton walked after his father. I felt sorry that he had to tell him the bad news but he was the next Alpha. His dad was going to give it up to him in a month. It was the whole reason I came back. The future pack needed to be here and prominent when it happened.
