"He looks a little green doesn't he?" Hermione commented when Ron walked into the great hall for breakfast.

"Yes. He does." Ginny agreed, looking at her brother with mild concern.

"Nervous Ron?" Harry smirked as Ron sat down beside Hermione.

"No, I'm fine." He lied. But his hand shook as he reached for a goblet, giving him away.

"Is that why you put that in his drink?" Luna asked from behind them and everyone followed her eyeline to Harry as he tucked away the tiny bottle that looked suspiciously like Felix Felices.

"Don't drink it Ron!" Hermione exclaimed, but Ron was gazing into the goblet with hope in his eyes and she knew he was a lost cause. He gulped it down rapidly.

"Come on Ron," Harry stood up from the table, "we've got a game to win." They slapped each other on the back as they strode away, leaving Ginny, Hermione and Luna behind.

"Where's Neville?" Hermione asked Luna who smiled brightly.

"He's still sleeping. He was doing herbology until late last night." Luna replied before bouncing away, the flapping mane of the lion head she had created bobbing up and down as she went.

.................................

Weasley is our King was the song that filled the hearts of everyone in the Gryffindor common room that evening. They cheered and hollered about Ron's phenomenal goal keeping while Hermione clapped slowly, shaking her head beside a grinning Harry.

"You know you shouldn't have done it." She said, knowingly.

"That's why I didn't. " She watched in amazement as Harry drew the filled bottle of Felix Felices from his pocket.

"You never put it in," Harry shook his head, a smug grin stretching across his face, "Ron only thought you did."

As Hermione looked back to Ron, who beamed triumphantly, high off the praise. She wanted to say something to him: congratulate him; to -

She had been trapped in her thoughts too long. In two short steps, Lavender Brown had stepped up to Ron, wrapped her arms around his neck and had her lips on his. And he was kissing her back.
Horrified, Hermione stumbled back, falling against the person behind her.

"Sorry." She muttered, before turning around and squeezing through the masses of Gryffindors towards the portrait hole.

She burst out into the empty, cold corridor, her cheeks already wet with tears. She needed to be alone; somewhere no one could find her. she raced along the corridors until she was below the astronomy tower, her back against the pillars, crying on the steps. She sobbed for everything she thought about Ron; how she thought he felt the same; how she was foolish to believe it.

"Hermione?" The voice alone made her freeze. She looked up slowly and his white hair reflected the moonlight out of the darkness, giving who it was away.

"Draco?" She choked and he stepped into view.

Concern was written in his features, his face dropped and shoulders tense.

"What are you doing here? Wait - are you crying?" That was it. She burst out, uncontrollable sobs wracking her body as she collapsed against the wall again. But her back never met the wall.

Draco's arms were around her, his big hands on her small elbows, his face close to hers, squatted in front of her.

"Hey, hey, hey." He shushed her, his grey eyes so full of emotion that Hermione had never seen in blue eyes. She had always associated warmth and love with Ron's honey brown eyes, but it was all she could find in Draco's usually-icy blue eyes, "What's wrong?"

Tears slipped silently down her face as she stared into Draco's eyes, entirely transfixed.
"Nothing." She whispered, her voice wavering. His frown deepened.

"Hermione," his voice had taken on a hard, unforgiving edge, "Who hurt you?"

"Ronald Bilius Weasley." She said bitterly, and to her suprise, Draco laughed.

She sat frozen as Draco's body shook with laughter, the boy who hadn't expressed the ghost of a smile in weeks was outright laughing.

"Only you could still sound entitled while crying." He explained between laughs and she punched his arm.

"Not funny." She said, but he had succeeded in making her smile.

They sat like that, Draco kneeling in front of her, while she sat on the steps, their faces level, his hands on her forearms, just talking, saying stupid things and not really making much sense, but to one another, it was what they needed.
