"Where is your brother and sister?!" Dad says. He seems on edge.
"They are on their way in...why? What's going on this time?" I turn and I see them walking in side kicking snow off of their shoes.
"We need to leave" dad touches my shoulder and brushes passed me towards Venessa and Jake. The words ring in my ears. We need to leave. Just as we thought it was all coming together. Just as we started to believe it was possible to have a normal life. It all came crashing down like an avalanche, weighing on my chest like a pile of rocks.
"They found us" Skyler rushed towards me.
"I don't know how...I don't know-" she started breathing heavily to hold back tears. I don't blame her. Part of me wanted to cry too.
"What?!" Yells Jake from behind me.
"How? We've been here for 6 years and haven't had any problems! Why now?!"
He throws his bag on the floor and starts to storm upstairs.
"Jake! Get back down here!" Dad starts to run after him.
"If we're getting out then I better start packing!" Jake slams his bedroom door shut. Dad sits on the stairs and digs the palm of him hands into his forehead.
"He's right" Venessa puts her bag down.
"If we have to go we better start packing now...we can get out by tonight".
"I-ill come he-help" Skyler stutters, still fighting back tears. I'm processing everything. I still don't really know how to react. I haven't felt this scared since about 6 years ago when we got here. I remember Venessa was 8, jake was 9, I was just about to turn 12. Skyler had turned 14 only three day before we found this town. Mom and dad told us not to get our hopes up, not to unpack until we knew it was safe. We still didn't unpack for a year. Those dressers all sat empty in our rooms. Unfilled. It was hard to teach Venessa and Jake when we were trying to live so cautiously. Dad created a secret basement where we could go. Mom hated the idea. She always wanted to pretend that we were normal. But if we never taught them, and we were thrown back on the streets, they would've been caught within days. Which would've created more and more sleepless nights. Like we didn't already have enough. Skyler probably would've gone invisible and never came back. Dad would spend all of his time searching for her until he got caught where he would never die. Mom would've tried to stay strong, but we all know that would last only 24 hours before she broke, lighting herself and everything around her at the time on fire. Me? I probably would go back to the 1980's. the music was great back then. That sounds like I would be in denial. Which I probably would. Mom hurries in and hugs me tighter than she ever has before.
"Your ok! Thank god" she pulls away almost as quickly as she hugged me and hurried up the stairs.
"Grab only what you need"
She yells into Venessa and Skylers room.
"Chase, come on sweety, we have to go" she runs into her room and dad follows close behind. I stand in the hallway. Motionless.
