Melissa P.O.V
"Mel...Mel...MELISSA."
"Huh wha." I look up and see my co-worker Zach shaking his head at me.
"New book" he chuckles gesturing to my worn down copy of the Hunger Games.
"Shut up." I mutter, starting to read again.
"You're 18 now, you should know better than to read on your breaks. Ten minutes is not enough to read anything. Not even a book you've read over 100 times." Zach chuckles. I roll my eyes at him.
"Well than missy... Mr. Lynch told me to tell you 'Your break is over.'" I smile as Zach tried to impersonate our Scottish boss. Mr. Lynch's accent is so thick, you can hardly understand what he is saying.
"That's no where near what he sounds like." I smirk putting my bookmark in my book. He rolls his eyes at me as I carefully put my book in my bag and than shove my bag into the cubby that each employee here at Bob's Books- The Best New and Used Bookstore in LA gets.
"How come you're so careful with your book if you just shove your bag into your cubby." Zach asked.
"I care if my book gets ruined but I don't care if my bag does. I need a new bag anyway." I responded as I walked towards the door
"Your killin' me smalls." He says as he slings his arm around me. Or more of rests his arm on my head since he is way taller than me. My other friend Delaney always teases us "OOH Zelissa forever but no. First if all, ew and second of all, Zach is one of the only people I can actually have a conversation with. I am very shy but yes I still have friends...two...but it works. I would rather have a few close friends that I can trust than a large group of friends that I can't trust and that will stab you in the back. I have had experience with that first-hand...but that's a story for a different day. As we walked out of the breakroom, towards the the registers, someone called Zach's name. He looked around and saw a short and squat man running to us. Ah its Mr. Lynch.
"Zachary! I need your help. I need you to restock the children's section! We don't have anymore picture books out!" He speaks so fast it's even harder to understand him than normal.
"Ok sir. I'll get right to it." Zach looks like he is about to salute him, but he cuts Zach off.
"No time for dilly-dallying. Get to work! Oh and Melissa, you will be working the register by your self" and with that Mr. Lynch walks off.
"I better get started...have fun" Zach winks at me before heading the opposite direction I was going. UGH. I hated working the register alone. I get bored so easily. And I don't have very good social skills...I get really awkward and anxious. Now, it might seem weird for someone who isn't very good at socializing to be working somewhere where you need to talk to people, but I love reading so this was my only option...and the library didn't have any employee openings.
I get behind the counter and log into the computer. I sit on the stool and twirl my hair waiting for someone to come and buy something. I wish I had my book. I take out my nametag from the drawer where I had placed it earlier. I start to pin it on my maroon polo shirt and than prick my self with the end. Crap! That really hurt. I get off the stool and rummage around in the bottom shelf for a band-aid. AHA. I found one. I grin victoriously and wrap it around my injured finger. Ding! I hear the bell on the door and I shoot up and try to make myself look presentable. I sit back on the stool just when I see a, attractive blonde boy walk up tho the counter. He was wearing a white American Flag tank-top with dark jeans and black Raybans. He is on the phone with someone.
"Yes mum...ok I'm here...yes...OK...bye" He runs his hands through his hair in frustration. He walks up to the counter with an exasperated look on his face.
"Um do you have any Nicholas Sparks books? My mom is looking for a specific one."
"Uh yeah...follow me." I hop off the stool and I headed over to wear the romance books were. As we were walking, he was ranting about having to come here. "Ugh don't you hate it when someone is doing absolutely nothing and they tell you they are 'busy' so they have you run their errands because they don't want to get off their fat a-"
"Here they are!" I gestured to the shelf with all of our Nicholas Sparks novels. "Was it this one?" I asked holding up Dear John.
"No...she said something about riding something for a long time." He said looking at the shelf. He moved the Ray-Bans up to his forehead making it easier to read.
"Was it this one?" I hold up The Longest Ride and handed it to him.
"Oh yeah. Thanks." I hand him the book and than I made the mistake of making eye-contact with him. His eyes were like the ocean, different shades of blue.
"uh..you-your welcome." We walk up to the cashier and I ring him him up.
"Your total is $11.17"
"Here you go." He said handing me the money. 'Thank you...wait I never got your name."
"Mel...issa. Well my friends call me Mel but my real name is Melissa...yeah." I stumbled. Great. My awkwardness and the fact I was talking to an EXTREMELY attractive guy did NOT help me at. all. I can literally feel the tomato growing on my face
"You sure about that?" He smirks
"Yes. I am see." I show him my name-tag and than I push my glasses onto the bridge of my nose.
"Ok..well I think Issa suits you better. Since it sounds like iffy- and if something's iffy your're unsure of it yah know."
"Mhm." Wait what! He grabs his stuff.
"Wait I didnt get your name" I call out.
"That's because I didn't give it to you," He winks. "Bye Issa." And with that he puts his Ray-Bans back on and walks out the door. While I sit on my stool and think to myself what the heck just happened.
