Wow. Thats all I have to say. After the blonde boy left, the store went quiet. The only sound was coming from the faint jazz music Mr. Lynch played for backround noise. I sit on my stool thinking about how much I just embarrassed myself.

"UGH" I bury my face in my hands when I hear foot-steps. I look up and I see Zach looking at me confused.

"What happened to you?" He asks.

"None of your buisness." I snap.

"Ooh someone's feisty today." Zach chuckles. Boys. I think to myself. When ever I embarrass myself, I think about for a really long time and think about different ways I could have made conversation but didn't.

"Hellooooo? Earth to Mel." Zach says, waving his hands in front of my face.

"Sorry." I look down and see my name tag is still on the desk. I grab it and put it on being extremely careful that I don't poke myself...again.

"What happened to your finger?" Zach asked.

"I uh sorta-kinda-not-really poked myself with it." I giggled.

"Oh Mel. Only you." Zach shook his head.

"Yeah. Oh well." I push my glasses up on my nose when I feel my phone vibrate in my pocket.

Mom-

Hi Melissa. I was wondering if you could run to the store after and pick up some flour? I was planning on making cookies tonight.

I quickly responded-

Ok. Anything else

I put my phone back into my pocket. And turn to Zach.

"Did you have fun restocking books" I asked.

"Yes. I was almost as fun as when I got lemon juice in my eye." He said, his voice dripping with sarcasm. I smile. THAT was hilarious. Zach, Delaney and I were out at Chili's for lunch and Zach was being his normal self and ended up with half a lemons worth of juice in his mouth-

**Flashback**

"No Zach thats so stupid." Delaney laughs. Zach had asked if instead of using cucumbers on your eyes, lemons would do the same. Zach, never wanting to be wrong, took the lemons out of mine and Delaney's iced tea and places them on his eyelids.

"HA!" he says triumphantly. Within seconds, his grin turned into an "O" and he yelps like an injured animal. He takes the lemons off of his face and chucks them across the patio.

**End of Flashback**

"Those were some good times my friend." I say, pulling my hair into a pony-tail.

"Speak for yourself." He says.

"Zachary! Where are you?" Mr. Lynch screams from across the store.

"I'm coming!" Zach screams back. He mutters something about grumpy old trolls and walks off. Buzz.

Mom-

No. That is all.

That is all? I swear my mom is so formal. I look at the clock. 4:30. I have two and a half more hours untill I get off work. What to do, what to do. I look around and see some scrap paper. OOH. I can make a cootie catcher. Lay out the paper and try to remember how to fold it. Goodness I haven't done this since fourth grade.

***

About 20 minutes later Zach is finishes helping Mr. Lynch and comes and helps me at the register. 15 minutes after that, I finally figure out how to make a semi-decent cootie catcher. It looked like something (Mr. Lynch) sat on it but other than that it looked ok. As soon as I figured it out, an elderly lady walked in.

"Hello um I have a book on hold...its under Ester." she says. I nudge Zach; it's his turn to socalize.

"Ok let me look for it." He smiles warmly. The woman, Ester, smiles and starts to walk around. See, he's very good with people. I honestly have no idea how we became friends. Zach turns around to look at the shelf behind the counter where we put the books on hold. He looks at it for about a minute and asks Ester

"Um, excuse miss but what book was it?"

"Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief. Its for my grand-daughter," Ester responds. "Why is it not there?"

"No it's here, I just cant seem to find your receipt." Zach says, the confusion evident in his voice.

"Oh okay..take all the time you need." Ester says cheerfully and contines her browsing. HA. THAT SUCKS. I think to myself. Sorry I must sound like a horrible friend, but when this happens, we have to print a new receipt and than whoever's working at that times gets lectured.

"Sucker." I mutter only loud enough for Zach to hear. I sit watching him with a smug look on my face, until he turns around with a worried look on his.

"Mel...I think you used her recipe as you germy thing." he whispers.

"Cootie catcher thank you very much." I whisper back. "But it could be, the paper was just sitting-" I curse instead of my head. HOW COULD I HAVE BEEN SO STUPID. The paper was underneath. a. freaking. rubber. band. And rubber bands hold the receipts and the books together. My face must have given what I did away because he chuckles and says

"Who's the sucker now." I mutter something in his ear I can't repeat and then try to unfold my masterpiece. I unfold and try to smoother it out but by the time I'm done, Zach is handing Ester a new receipt and says

"Ma'am I m so sorry for the wait. Here is a 30% off coupon on your next purchase." He smiles with his bright blue eyes and the woman seems to melt.

"Oh dear don't worry about it. Sometime life makes things complicated." She hands her the credit card and Zach completes the transaction.

***

After Ester leaves, Zach and I banter back and forth untill our shifts end. We part ways in the parking lot and I walk to my yellow bug. I get into my car, put the key into the ignition, turn on the radio  and head to the store. All the sudden, Neon Lights by Demi Lovato comes on.

"This is my jam." I turn it up.

Baby, when they look up at the sky

We'll be shooting stars just passing by

You'll be coming home with me tonight

We'll be burning up like neon lights

I know I sing loud and off-key and dancing but since my windows are rolled up, I don't care. Or I didn't until I stopped at a stoplight and some random pedestrians crossed the street and looked at me like I was on drugs. I blush and stop dancing and start humming the song until I pull into the parking lot of Safeway. I lock my car and walk into the store. I walk over to aisle 4 to the Baking section. I grab a bag of flour and head to the checkout humming to myself. I was acting somewhat normal until I saw my clerk.

It was a familiar blonde haired-blue eyed boy.

Could this day get any worse.
