I could feel the heat of eight people's gazes staring holes through me - a feeling I was quite used to.
"What?" Hailey's voice was so loud, I nearly thought she screamed. "We weren't supposed to leave until tomorrow!" I shrugged. "Plans change."
Several people left the room, including Hailey. Willie scowled at me, arms crossed. "You're gonna get us all killed," he said, a muscle pulsing in his jaw.
"I'm in charge here. The sooner you learn that, the easier it'll be to not die." I snapped. Irritation tickled my nose. "You know how to shoot?" I asked after a moment of tense silence. Willie nodded.
"Good." I shoved a pistol at his chest. "You're gonna need this."

Everyone had packed bags with food, water, and other things within an hour. Each person had at least a backpack full- a good start, if I say so myself. The women (excluding me) had found clothes suitable for everyone to change into. Except Alyssa, of course.
I snuck off to the bathroom to change, pulling on a pair of worn out, ancient jeans and a long sleeve thermal shirt. I found an old razor in the cabinet behing the mirror, and used it to shave the lower half of my already short hair off. I admired my handiwork.
I tried not to look at the dark circles under my eyes.
Standing at the top of the stairs, I listened to the conversations being held below me.
"Gonna get us all killed." "Nutcase." "Not even an adult!" I shook my head and laughed. Damn. Could they be any louder?
I laced up my boots and stomped down the stairs. "The bitch is in." I announced blandly, raising the hem of my shirt slightly to show off my gun in a not-so-obvious way. Noel and Maddy winced.
"God, Mary. It's not necessary to use such vulgar language."
I scowled. "Last time I checked, the world is ending. I'd say a few bad words are necessary."
"Where are we going?" A small voice spoke up. I felt a pang in my heart, unsure of the answer, but tried to keep an emotionless expression.
"Somewhere safe. With food, and medicine. Somewhere we can all actually survive in."
"And where would that be, princess?" Willie's cocky voice challenged me, causing me to grit my jaw.
"I'll know when we find it," I said matter-or-factly. "But if any of you would like to stay here, feel free to starve."
The growing whispers went silent at my comment. Realization flooded their eyes.
"I've welcomed you into my home, and you have the nerve to speak about me behind my back," I spat, crossing my arms. "If you think you can make better decisions than I can, you're more than welcome to. But do it somewhere else, because here? I'm the boss."
Dean let out a low whistle, standing in the doorway. "You are a bitch," he said with a proud smile.
"Traveling at night means lower visibility. Does anyone wanna tell me what that means?" I asked, jutting out my chin and staring brashly at the group.
"Means we can't see," Someone grumbled.
"Means that those things out there can't see us." I answered, narrowing my eyes. "There's not a lot we know about them, but we do know that they're less active at night. Whether it's visibility or some kind of sunlight reaction, we need to move when they're at their weakest. Is that clear enough for you?"
A few more murmurs, then nothing.
"We move quickly, and we move together. If you can't keep up," I looked around again, meeting each and every terrified gaze. "Then you're on your own."
"You're still a child, what gives you the right to be in charge of us?" A man, I think Justin, said in a low voice. "You expect us to put our lives in the hands of a teenager?"
"Mary is much more capable of handling herself than any of you are." Dean growled, immediately jumping to my defense. I raised a hand to silence them.
"If you want to live, then yes. If you want to become zombie food, then fuck off and do whatever you want. But again, the choice is entirely yours. Decide now."
The room burst alive with conversation. "I'm not following that little psychopath anywhere!" "She's our only chance at survival, look at her brother." "She's kept us alive so far." "Yeah, for all of 24 hours! It doesn't take a miracle worker to do that!"
Noel stepped forward and smiled. "Mary, you took us in and saved us. I'm coming with you."
A few others stepped forward as well, some wearing smiles but most supporting a grim expression.
"Then let's do this."
