When I got home my mom was sitting on the porch reading and drinking her tea.
“Hey darlin, you’re home early.”
“Yeah, we were just getting breakfast. We’re goin out to Slick’s tonight.”
“Who’s we?” She asked raising her eyebrow.
“Gabby, Josh, Braxton, and I.”
“Ohhh, hangin out with Braxton now? I thought y’all two would avoid each other after what happened that first night.”
“We have the same friends, that makes it kind of hard to avoid each other.”
“I was just sayin! Y’all have just always been so cute together! You know he-“
“Mom! I don’t care! Him and I… we’re not ever gonna be anything again. I need to go call Kelly, I’ll see you later.” I walked into the house not waiting for her response.
“Hey, hey, hey! How’s the South treatin ya?!”
“Kelly, I miss New York. It’s so boring here!”
“Well, then let me bring you some good ol’ NYC drama! Your boss called.”
“What did he say? What did you tell him?!”
“Relax! He asked if something was wrong since he hadn’t heard from you and you hadn’t been at work. I told him you had to go home for a family emergency.”
“Yeah, well no one even died. My mom just lied because she missed me, and I think she’s trying to get me back with Braxton.”
“No way! That’s sooo crazy! Are you going to get back with him?”
“NO! He’s the past…we’re the past. There’s no way we would work now. But we have been hanging out considering we have the same friends and it’s such a small town. The first night I was here my mom invited his family over for dinner and we had an argument. I told him I had hot sex with my boss, but only because he said he got laid all the time. Which totally can’t be true!”
“Wow, you two have a lot of problems. But anyone could tell you still like him, and he still likes you.”
“Oh, god!” I groaned, “Not you too! I do not like him and he definitely does not like me!”
“You two are trying to make each other jealous, and your relationship just kind of ended, and clearly neither of you has moved on.”
“Whatever, I have to get ready, we’re going to Slick’s.”
“Sounds dirty! Hump a couple guys for me!”
“You wish. I’ll call you later!”
“Ok, hey by the way, when are you coming back?”
“I’m leaving on Monday. So what, today is Wednesday? That’s four days.”
“Good, I miss you!”
“I miss you too Kelly! Bye!”
I dug through my suitcase trying to find something decent to wear, something that I wouldn’t mind getting ruined by beer and sweat. I decided on some old jeans and a white camisole. I straightened my hair out some and redid my makeup in a more dramatic, night look. I planned on getting drunk and dancing like crazy tonight; just what I needed. This meant that I would need to crash at someone else’s house. I didn’t want to drive and leave the rental at the bar, so I swallowed my pride and picked up my phone.
“She was just gettin' home from Panama City, she was all tanned up and my kinda pretty.”
As soon as that damn phone started ringin I knew I had won this time. Yet, I couldn’t bring myself to answer it right away, it was too much fun makin her wait; she hated that.
