Derek puts the plate away on the bedside table and I sigh in relief.
My stomach was full. Derek didn't understand that I had a very small appetite. He didn't understand I haven't seen so much food before. He didn't understand I haven't eaten a full belly meal in seven years.
But it did not bother me because for one, he kept saying it was for my own good. And secondly, as I said, he didn't know.
"Can you walk?" Derek asked, moving in front of me.
Can I walk? I haven't walked on two limbs in years. I shake my head no.
"Can we try?"
I don't say anything in return because I don't think I can or want to try.
I feel really tired. I want to go back to sleep, even though I only just woke up.
Derek puts out his hand, palm facing up, urging me to take it. He's not giving me an option. So I take it and he pulls me to the edge of the bed.
I swing my legs off the bed. Just when I'm about to put them down Derek comes closer and pulls me up by waist with my feet landing on his big ones.
If it wasn't for his arm around me, I would be on my butt right now.
Derek smirks at me. He knows he has that power over me, his arm was the only support.
I narrow my eyes at him, I had a feeling he was upto someth—
"Aaaahh!" I squeal as he takes his arm away and just when I'm about to land my ass on the floor he pulls me back to him.
I instantly put my arms around his neck tight, in fear he would let go again.
Derek laughs but puts his arms around my waist to hug me anyway. His laugh evaporates after a while, followed by silence and we stay like that for a few long moments. Just listening to each other's body. The sound of his heavy breathing. The sound of his heart beating. And I swear I could even hear the sound of his muscles flexing.
"I won't let go." Derek whispered in my ear, breaking the silence eventually.
I just tighten my hold on his neck and then I feel his lips on my temple, "Ever." He promises with a kiss.
I pull back slightly to look into his eyes. They held nothing but the truth.
He won't let go of me. Ever.
....But then Mommy and Daddy had said the same thing.
I ignore the pang in my heart and loosen my hold on him.
Derek smiles.
"Okay, put your left foot on the floor now," he says, looking down at my feet, coming back to the situation at hand.
I do as he instructs, putting my left foot on the cold wooden floor.
The feeling of my bare foot on a surface was so foreign yet familiar at the same time.
I do the same with my right leg, fascinated.
I beam up at Derek but realise he had already been staring at me all this while with a soft smile playing on his lips. He grins back at me, his expression almost....proud.
I wiggle my toes, giggling to myself. I couldn't do that with my paws.
I look up again only to find my mate meters away, with his arms crossed. I start grinning at him before I realise he had let me go, that I had no support.
I was all by myself.
My eyes widen and my legs start trembling. I stumble a few steps and then I feel my balance loose.
I close my eyes at the last moment, expecting an impact that was to follow.
But it never came.
Instead an arm went behind my knee and shoulder that lifted me off the ground.
"Woah! I got you." Derek said softly. I opened my eyes then. "I think that's enough for today, we'll try again tomorrow." He decided.
I crane my neck around towards the balcony and see dusk falling. I look back at Derek and nod. Tomorrow then.
Derek carries me to the glass chamber sort of thing that I had presumed was the bathroom, earlier. Turns out it is the bathroom.
Derek pushes the glass door open and right as we enter there is a mirror and sink right in front of us. On the right of which was a commode toilet on the right of which was an enormous square bathtub. Minimal and yet... luxurious.
Derek set me on the sink platform as he walked to the bathtub and turned the tap on. I instantly turned a one eighty degree to look in the mirror.
A pale brunette stared back at me with big brown eyes. Her lips were purple with all the color drained from it. If I didn't know any better, I'd say she was in trauma with all pale skin and widened eyes.
She was me.
I slowly reached my hand up to feel my skin. Dried lips, thin nose, high and bony cheekbones that were even more so visible due to the sunken skin, and dirty hair.
I looked... grown up. Ugly. Mature. Older. Sad.
Another face appears beside mine. A happy and good looking face. Unlike mine.
Derek winks at me and I smile back in the mirror. He brings his cheek closer and then rubs his stubble on my cheek. I screech and pull away giggling.
"Hurts," I whine playfully rubbing my now red cheek.
Derek just gives me a cheeky grin in return.
I look at the mirror again. I don't look so old anymore with playfulness dancing in my eyes.
Derek taps my side after a few moments. "Come on, your bath is ready." He says nodding at the bathtub that now as I see was filled with water.
Turning back around I lift my arms up in the air knowing Derek would be carrying me there. And so he does.
