During the earthquake everything went south. The ground shook and rumbled. Power lines fell and buzzed. Rain fell in sheets, attacking the windows on an already unstable house. Looking out side through the cracked window I could see beams falling from houses, shingles raining down on the pavement. Trees fell from unstable rooting and the weight of rain.

Then it happened, the first building fell, everything was surrounded by smoke. I heard a creak from my house. I knew it was about to happen. I held my little brother tight against my chest. It went black.

Next thing I know we are leaving the smoky damaged ruins of our beautiful town. Tears were streaming from everyone, everywhere. In our barely mobile car with our immobile bodies, outside with the broken hearts surrounding broken bodies. In the church with damaged walls and cracked pews, surrounded by damaged spirits and cracked hopes.

As we made our way slowly through the streets, overfilled with rubble, true heart break was finally setting in, my family has made it out easy. With only property damage and a single casualty, we were lucky. Families mourned and grieved in circles on the crumbling pavement.

Leaving was the worst way to go, although it wasn't ideal, it was the best way to get back on our feet. The scene finally changed as we left the city. I cried harder than i'd ever done before. I don't remember getting on the plane. But by the time I came to my senses the plane was already in the air.

I look out over the vast horizon. I can't see anything familiar, I immediately started sobbing again. Probably my last chance to see my home and it was gone.
