Rain

The day was calm. It was quiet too, the sky bearing a cloudy grey hue throughout most of the afternoon. I sat on my bed, doing my college homework as usual, when a crack of thunder sounded. Then came the smooth pitter-patter of rain. I smiled softly to myself. I longed for these moments; when it would rain and ease my never ending nerves. I wanted it to last like this forever. I thought for a moment, and closed my thick textbook, laying it on the floor. I quietly adjusted myself into a laying position, relaxing myself into the boundless amounts of pillows and blankets. I let out a slow breath as the rain continued to hit my bedroom window. I closed my eyes and listened to the sounds outside, as they showed no signs of stopping. The cars were bustling about on the streets, trying to get to their destinations on time. The construction workers would most likely end their toil for the day, due to the sudden cloud burst. Birds quieted their song as they cozied up in their nests and trees, as they tried to keep their feathers from receiving anymore rain water than they already had. And of course, there was me, my breathing echoing within the walls of the apartment. It was days like these that made me glad I had moved away from home; glad that I finally given myself a bit of freedom. I could feel myself dozing off, the outside ambience doing more than enough to soothe me. I let sleep take over and I silently hoped that the rain would be still be here comforting me when I woke up.
