"Breezeheart, can I try real prey today instead of milk? Pretty please?" Nightkit begged.
"Hmm, I suppose your old enough. Why don't you ask your father which prey is the best." Breezeheart answered.
"Okay!" Nightkit mewed excitedly as she dashed off to find Clearwind. She found him siting by the fresh-kill pile talking to Mudclaw.
"Clearwind I'm trying prey! Which one should I have?" Nightkit meowed.
"Huh... Oh, I don't care. Just pick one. I'm too busy." Nightkit's tail fell a little bit. No, she thought, I wont let him put me down on my first time trying prey! She bounded excitedly to the freshkill pile and picked a juicy rabbit off the top. She took a huge bite. Mmm, this is delicious, she thought. She took another bite, savouring the flavour flooding her senses, and decided she was full. She was about to ask Clearwind if he wanted any, but she got the feeling that Clearwind didn't want to be interrupted again. I know I'll bring it to Breezeheart, she thought. So, she carefully dragged the rabbit out to Breezeheart, who was basking in the sun in front of the nursery.
"Here, I brought you some." She declared through a mouthful of fur
"Thank you, darling, that's sweet of you." Though Breezeheart spoke calmly, there was pride in her eyes.
"Did Clearwind help you pick it out?" Breezeheart asked.
"I asked him, but he said he didn't care. He was too busy." Nightkit thought her mother would be proud that she picked her own prey, but instead there was a sudden rage in her eyes. Without another word Breezeheart stalked over to Clearwind. "May I please have a word with you?!" Breezeheart hissed. The two of them went behind an ivy bush. Quickly, Nightkit scrambled over to listen. She had a feeling her parents would not want her to hear, so she hid on the other side of the bush. She perked her ears up so she could hear as clear as possible.
"You have always been mean and selfish to me! I-" Breezeheart started.
"Well, why didn't you do something about it?" Clearwind replied, sarcastically.
"My misguided love for you blinded me from most of it! But now you are selfish to are kit! Our lovely, innocent kit! And its not just today! You never shown any interest or kindness to her! Well, that ends here!" Breezeheart spat that last part with more rage then Nightkit had ever heard in any cat.
"I am her father I can act any way I want to her." Clearwind retorted.
"She has NO father!" Breezeheart spat and stalked back to the nursery. Tears blinding her eyes, Nightkit ran as fast as her paws could carry her. When she could no longer run she collapsed on a pile of dried leaves. She had never been out of camp and knew she wasn't allowed. But she didn't care. She didn't care about anything. It's my fault my mother has no mate and I have no father, she thought miserably. She closed her eyes willing herself to open them and find out is was all a crazy nightmare. She blinked them open, nope she was still in the pile of leaves. Tears running down her cheeks, she fell into a restless sleep.
