Chapter 5: Turmaline
The human girl whom Vermillon found in the abandoned temple was growing a skin of Turmaline. Half of her face was already grained with specks of purple and green. Vermillon let her go, like all the others they had found. It would not take long for the stone to engulf her human skin. Vermillon shuddered at the thought that the Witch might one day sow human flesh into his red fur.
Turmaline, moonstone and jasper. Vermillon and his men had gone to half the temples in the city yet every girl they hit with the poison had turned to stone.
How long would the Dark Witch have him search? How long would he have to look a fool in front of his soldiers, the King and himself? What if she invented the dream to separate him from Pirlanta? To have him search for a fictional bone like a dog.
Vermillon looked down at the city before him. His men were growing nervous. The fae usually avoided human encounters especially when they were in great numbers. The Witch knew that very well.
This was a game.Yes, that's what it was. Nothing but a game. He was tired of being her dog.
A spider settled on Vermillon's chest just as he was about to give the order for their return to the Unseelie Palace. It clawed it's way through his black uniform, and settle its fangs right above his heart and suddenly the Unseelie saw the human girl just as clearly as the Witch had in her dream.
It could not be.
The Unseelie will rise and the seelie will fall,
You will gain power to it all.
The stone will give you what you seek,
But a dragon's child will make you weak.
It holds the key to your demise,
And with it a new reign will rise.
It was a myth. An old wive's tale. But he saw it clearly, the bright white and dark black and its battle as it beat against her skin like a promise.
The Dragon's Child.
What are you waiting for, Vermillon? Find her!
The spider released its fangs from his chest, and he saw the Night Market and Macao Island. Places that were on the western side of the island. He had been searching on the wrong side.
Vermillon suppressed a curse and swatted the spider dead.
His men looked at him in surprise when he gave orders that they were to be going west, but they were relieved he didn't lead them deeper into the city.
Vermillon wiped the dead spider's corpse from his uniform. None of them had seen the spider, and they would all confirm that he had found the Dragon's Child without the Witch's help. For it was Pirlanta's leadership that made him a great king, not the spells cast by his mistress.
Dragon.
She had dreamed the truth.
Or had turned the dream into truth.
