This couldn't be right. Yet as Brittany stood there, wishing for a correction, the words did not repeat. Level 3? That was ridiculous, perhaps introducing them to the game first was more . . . suited to the program.
"Level 0? That's dumb," Asher wrinkled her nose. Surprising Brittany, the girl of around the age 20 spoke further, "What about 1?"
"Stage not level, but 0 is a bonus, I would know." Nicolás said, his tone scolding at her error. "And I don't know, maybe you went the wrong way, Britain."
"Brittany," she scowled. He had the decency to forget her name and insult her. No wonder this was the first time she was here in Resurrection. You had to be perfect. Thinking too far into it, Brittany gritted her teeth. "It's not as if I was driving wherever the hell I wanted! There was a map, guiding me sometimes."
"Since when could idiots read those?"
"Has everyone failed to noticed that it's level 3 and not 1?" Phoenix sounded annoyed, but only Iris paid attention to what he had to say. Brittany glared at Nicolás, teeth gritted as he stared back in return. As they all looked at each other, a sound of creaking nearby the bus replaced their attention. Brittany reached for the small gun at her pocket, readying herself in case. This world was dangerous, as would the journey. Yet, that wasn't the only fact on her mind.
What of the 'restart button'? The restart button was a button (obviously) located on the middle of your armour. It was designed to give you another life if you died. Similar to a video game. It was another reason as to why people took risks here. If someone had their back, they'd be invincible. This device was only a project at the moment, not designed for the public. Often why scientists played this 'game'. The group of five would usually get the option to restart at the beginning, but since they arrived in backward, that was a problem. Now, what if someone died? They wouldn't be able to come back, they'd be truly dead. Forever.
Examining her surroundings with little interested, she only discovered trees. They loomed over the group of five, as if aiming to intimidate. It worked as Brittany found herself backing away and toward everyone else. They were like ants in this world and that scared her. Some creature could just run up and grab hold of her in its jaws, then that would be it.
"We need to go back," Nicolás tone was suggesting feelings he had not revealed. "There is no 'restart button', thus, we must leave or die."
What was with his vocabulary? Brittany thought to herself, it was as if he grew up a dictionary. The consumer of words. Attempting not to judge any further, she busied herself with the weapon in her arms.
A low growl rumbled nearby the bus. Like it was just on the other side. It startled her to such an extant that she wrapped her finger around the trigger. Nicolás lifted his own gun, advancing to where it had come from. This seemed all too normal for him. Then again, he had said he played Resurrection over five times or something like that. Brittany followed through her hesitance, looking back only to find the other three sticking together in a tight circle. Sighing and shaking her head, she reached the corner and prepared herself. She inhaled and exhaled, before stepping forward and turning the corner of the bus at unexplainable speed.
Brittany screamed and moved her gun to where it was pointing at the 'dimetrodon'. (They had learned of the dinosaur's names at a very young age). It was sniffing under the bus, its snout almost lifting it up. On its back was a large sail, the shape reminding her of a semi-circle. That in itself was about the height of her head, and she was 5'8. Beneath that was the body of an ordinary lizard. It was grey and now staring back at her. The face of a predator. It continued chewing whatever it had in its mouth. Shakily, she fired a warning shot. Apparently, giant lizards do not appreciate threats. The creature charged for her. It's legs waddling from side to side like a penguin. Yet, the speed it was going was far faster than a bird. She backed up and turned, sprinting for her life.
"Help!" She squealed as the two ran around the bus, where was Nicolás when you needed him? The dimetrodon roared, causing Brittany to turn, he was closer than she thought. Not only that, but she got front row seat to a layer of sharp teeth. His face was around the height of her knees and seemed to be attempting to bite her leg off. What a great way to start the game; being chased by a giant lizard on its periods.
A shot rang out, a thud following soon after. Brittany looked back for a short second and discovered the dinosaur was laying at an awkward angle, head dangling.
She stopped. Eyebrows furrowing, she glanced around to discover Asher - Ashley(?) lowering the gun.
"Why did you do that?" Nicolás was annoyed, lips pulling down into a frown as he stared at the creature. "That was funny."
"I didn't hear you laughing," Brittany said, clenching her fists. Fortunately for her, the animal was a little too large to fit through some of the trees. Thus, if she were in trouble any longer, the forest would assist her.
"Maybe because you were too busy getting chased by a dinosaur."
"Where did you even disappear? I swear you were right in front of me!"
"I went back here when I saw him, they are passive aggressive. Those things normally eat only small mammals," Nicolás rolled his eyes at her idiocy. Why didn't he tell her? It wasn't as if she were a walking dinosaur Wikipedia.
"Was that the bonus level?" Phoenix seemed to be the only one asking serious or important questions. That fact was what Brittany appreciated.
Nicolás laughed, at which she scowled, fantastic. "Are you serious? Of course not. That was just a small stepping stone, like practice."
"What is wrong with you? What's up with your vocabulary?" Brittany was irritated, and he was just . . . There. Already, she wanted to leave this place. If there was a chance of dying, then why would she want to stay? She only wanted to have fun. Sure, she was a coward. But at least she could own up to it.
"Sorry my language is too intelligent for you."
Waving him off, Brittany hopped back onto the bus and awaited everyone else. As the minutes grew longer, she decided to check what they were doing. Did she require to give them a heads up? Looking to her right, she spotted them in the rearview mirror walking in another direction. Cheeks heating, she jumped down the few steps and strode toward them. There was always that one person you didn't get along with, Nicolás just happened to be that person.
Looking back over her shoulder at the small open area surrounded by trees, she sighed as the bus ever so slightly got further and further away. Slumping her shoulders, she wondered whether it would still be in one piece when they got back.
----
As the group reached the grounds, Brittany merely gaped. Not in amazement, instead horror. Right before her eyes was a plain like desert. Yet that was not what had her so worried. There, littering the entire area was dimetrodons. A dinosaur she hated with a passion.
What worried her was that this was only the beginning of the journey ahead of them. Yet already, she felt like going home and never coming back.
(A/N: As you've probably noticed, I changed it from six people to five as the last one hadn't spoken yet and it would be too hard to remember. And let me know if this is too long please :)
