Cotton candy was enclosed in Lizzy’s hand. She’d had it since she arrived at the carnival with Drew, but still hadn’t even attempted to taste the fairy floss. She watched as Drew ate his, savoring every bit of it. Liz thought about how intriguing it was that the treat started out so fluffy, so colourful, so appealing- only to end up melting almost instantly. Such a wonderful thing would end up with digestive acids eating away at it, dissolving as soon as one savoured it.
“Liz? Liz? Anyone home?” Drew knocked on her head, attempting to grab her attention. She’d been staring at a piece of forgotten candy floss that laid on the floor for a few seconds to long.
Once Drew had gotten her attention, he lead her to one of the tallest rides: the ferris wheel. Lizzy hadn’t even noticed where she was headed, she was so lost in her thoughts that she was on autopilot, just doing what she was told, not even having to think about it.
As the ferris wheel rose, Lizzy stared at the world below her, the ant sized people scrambling around on the ground beneath her. She was so high up, she began to wonder what it would be like if someone were to plummet down.
Drew spoke again, this time he managed to get Lizzy’s attention immediately. “Hey Liz, smile for the camera,” he said, handing her a cigarette.
“I’ve told you to get those things away from me. I don’t want it,” Lizzy reminded him for what seemed like the millionth time.
“Oh come on, it won’t actually kill you. That’s just one of those stories adults say to scare you,” Drew argued. Lizzy knew he was wrong, but she also knew that if she didn’t take it, there would be consequences to face later. Consequences that would be worse that premature ageing or dying of lung cancer.
Lizzy decided she had had enough of Drew’s twisted intentions and acid comments. She decided she needed to do something to make sure he didn’t pester her again.
As she took the cancer stick from in between Drew’s middle and index finger, she smiled at him, and for a split second, Drew thought he’d finally won her trust again; that is, until Lizzy tossed the cigarette over her shoulder and off the ferris wheel, not caring where it landed. Drew’s grin immediately vanished, and was replaced by a look of complete, utter horror. Lizzy unfastened the ride’s harness and shoved Drew off the ride. To Drew, it all happened in a flash. One minute he was in the clouds, the next he was being pulled down to Earth.
Only moments later, the park was filled with blood curling screams. People ran to Drew’s lifeless body, terrified of the corpse lying before them. The ferris wheel stopped, and Lizzy took this time to reflect on what had just happened.
At first all Lizzy could think of was how wonderful life would be without Drew. For the first time in years, she wouldn't have to be forced to take mentally damaging substances anymore, no more unnecessary criticism, and best of all, the freedom to do whatever made her happy.
Freedom. The word ricocheted in the mind. Freedom would be the one thing she’d lack if she was incarcerated for manslaughter. She didn’t want to have to face time in prison, but it would still be better than having to put up with Drew. Lizzy didn’t worry to much about getting caught though, her intuition told her everything would work out well.
Months later, Lizzy was still a free citizen. No one seemed to suspect a thing, because everyone who knew Drew knew that he was emotionally unstable, and didn’t doubt his mind had been the cause to his own death. Especially with the help of the fake note that Lizzy had written; she never would have guessed that the similarities in his and her handwriting would be so convenient.
Lizzy never forgot about the incident. In her mind, Drew was a distant reminder of how quickly a life could be brought to an end. Their “friendship” was nothing more than spun sugar. It seemed so appealing, but as soon as she got a taste of what she predicted to be a wonderful bond, their closeness was ruined not by digestive acids, but by acid remarks from a toxic friend.
