Luke took Birdie back to the camp fire.
"Hey! I found her!" he announced.
There were relieved faces all around.
"Do you want me to take you back to your cabin?" he asked her.
She didn't say anything, and he realized that she was dozing off on his shoulder. He picked her up, and carried her to the Hera cabin.
He tucked her into the only bed and brushed her hair out of her face. She was so pretty with the dim light casting shadows on her face.
Stop that, he thought, you can't like her, you'd hurt her just like you hurt everyone else.
He couldn't resist though, he kissed her on the forehead before turning to the door. When he did, he found a girl, leaning against the door frame, smiling.
"Hi," she said, whispering, "I'm Piper"
Luke smiled. He had heard about her. The nicest person ever or something.
"Look," she said, "I've only known Birdie for three days, but she's already like a little sister to me. The first thing she did when she came to camp was read Leo's mind. She figured that I was a big sister to everyone, like I was to him, so that's what I became to her."
"What do you mean?"
"Luke, I'm Aphrodite's daughter. I know a couple when I see one. I'm her big sister, so I look out for her. If you break her heart, I will break your face."
Luke backed away. He guaranteed he had more fighting experience than this girl, but something told him that he should do what she said. Besides, who would ever want to break the heart of a girl so sweet and understanding, and beautiful, and-he was getting carried away.
Luke walked to the Hermes cabin. He hadn't stepped on this thresh hold in forever. He cautiously knocked on the door. Conner Stoll opened it.
"Hey man! Good to see you again...Not dead!
"Erm, thanks. Are there any bunks left for me?"
"Absolutely! You've got the one on the far right."
Luke lied down on his bunk. He thought about how he had kissed Birdie goodnight, and fell asleep with visions of her soft brown hair, and dark blue eyes dancing around his head.
