I sat in my bedroom window reading a book, watching the sun rise over the water like I did every morning.
This was my life now. Living on a small lake, alone and comfortable with it.
After I got prepared for my morning run, I grabbed the leash from off the kitchen table and whistled for my Aussie Shepard Luna. She came trotting over and followed me outside. I walked down the front steps of my cabin house and knelt down to put the leash on Luna. After, I took a good long look at my cabin.I built this place with my bare hands. It took me a year and a half. I'd traveled for a long while before I stumbled across this little lake. It was mesmerizing to me. It almost called my name. I knew it would be home.
I started my run along the lake. I was running for a few miles, I had found my usual dirt path in the woods and had a steady pace going. Luna started to push me forward more aggressive than normal. I shrugged it off because I knew we hadn't gone for a run in a few days. After a few minutes I heard the sound of a branch snapping behind me. I stopped abruptly and turned around trying not to seem nervous or scared. I kept my eyes trained in the direction I heard the sound. I was about to turn around and continue my run when a coyote jumped out of the bushes and zoomed past me. It startled me to say the least and Luna was barking. But I was relieved that no one was following me. I sighed and continued my run.
I was almost back to my cabin when I heard the faint sounds of howling coming from the woods. I ignored it and continued toward my house. I didn't get very far before a coyote came out and pounced onto Luna. I screamed so loud but my screaming was cut short by the sound of an arrow heading my way. It pierced through my chest and sent me to the ground. Luna was laying by me whimpering. Coyotes surrounded us. They got closer and closer and right before they pounced on me, I saw someone walk towards me holding a crossbow.
I jerked myself awake sitting up in bed. It was just a dream. I heard the howling outside my window and knew that's why I had been having that dream. I looked over at Luna laying peacefully next to me. I turned my head to look at the clock. I thought that since it was 5 am I mine as well go downstairs and see how much wood I have in the shed. I put on some clothes and walked downstairs. Luna soon followed. I put on my coat and my gloves and stepped out into the dark morning air. An eerie fog had set over the lake. I walked to the shed and opened up the door. I groaned realizing that I only had enough wood for a few fires in the fireplace. In order to build my house I had to chop down a few trees. I had gotten pretty strong after chopping so much wood. I went to the back of the shed and rolled out four big pieces of a large tree. I grabbed my ax and began to chop at the wood. After getting two done I dropped some wood at my front door and put the rest in the shed. When I went back to chopping I heard Luna barking in the distance. By this time it had gotten a little lighter outside, the sun was beginning to rise. I stopped chopping and looked around for my curious little Luna. I heard her barking getting closer as I called for her. When she ran out of the trees towards me she came up to me and started jumping up on me frantically.
"What is it girl? What's your problem huh?"
As she continued to jump on me I heard leaves rusting where Luna had emerged moments ago. I sternly told Luna to sit and stay. She obeyed immediately. I then walked a few steps toward the woods and put a hand behind my back slowly reaching for my revolver. As I walked closer the sounds just kept getting louder. I stopped and kept my hand on my gun.
I was about to call out to the person or thing making all the noise when a dark figure emerged from the woods.
I pulled out my gun and held it up to the figure."Who the fuck are you? This is private property! I have a gun and I will not hesitate to use it."
