The base of Theo's alternative music rattles the foundation of our house

The base of Theo's alternative music rattles the foundation of our house. Jumping out of bed, I storm across the hall to his bedroom. I yank the door open and shoot a glare. The speakers resting under his queen-sized bed are shaking from the intensity. The glowing red light flashes to the beat of the base and illuminates the mess scattered on the ground.

"Can you turn that crap down?" I shout. "Some of us need to think and that music isn't helping."

Theo slowly swivels around in his computer chair to glare back at me. I can't take him seriously with his black hair covering half his face. He bites his lip piercing before standing up. He reaches under the bed to turn the music down a fraction. It doesn't do much because the speakers are still rattling.

"I can't wait until Mum and Dad leave, then you can't tell me what to do," groans Theo.

"You'll have the neighbours complaining instead," I point out.

"Fuck the neighbours, I don't care what they say," he replies.

"Of course, that is your answer to everything."

Mum comes flying up the stairs and down the passageway in a huff. She manages to push her way past me and into Theo's room. She turns the music off and then looks between the pair of us.

"Hey there, what's the arguing about?" inquires Mum.

Taking a step back, I look at Theo before explaining the situation to her.

"Theo is always playing his music too loudly. I'm trying to read."

"Please keep the music down while your sister is reading, Theo," she replies.

"It's summer break. Can't she go somewhere else? I want to enjoy the holidays," explains Theo.

"Then how about you get your lazy butt out of this stinky dark room and do something?" she teases. "This can't be good. Can you open a window at least?" Theo walks towards the window and opens it up before returning to his desk chair.

"Happy?" he asks.

"Very." She smiles. "Now your father and I are almost ready to leave. You both know the drill. Nobody is allowed over, no partying, don't break anything, and you can call us anytime."

"You said Leighton could come over, no fair."

"Leighton is like family, he can come over anytime."

"Thanks," says Theo.

At least if Leighton is over, they'll play video games downstairs and I can enjoy the silence to read. I have a huge summer reading list that I want to get through before school starts again.

"Can I go to Anna's house this week?"

"Only if her parents are okay. Otherwise, just stay at the house. I don't want you two gallivanting along the countryside."
