She sat in the corner of her room, looking at the beige carpet underneath her and thinking about everything that could've been done differently. Maybe if she stood a few inches to left or if she held on tighter.... No. It happened already. There's no bringing back what's already gone.
The day of the accident started of amazing. Danielle had no school that morning and it was scarily warm for mid November at 70°F so Danielle decided to volunteer to go walk to the store. It was a weird day where she felt like she needed to actually leave the house for a little while. Since she volunteered to go her mom said she could buy whatever she wanted with the change and Danielle knew exactly what she wanted.
When she got out of the store she made sure she had enough money. Sure enough there were $3. Which was really more than enough. After crossing the busy street (and cursing out the dumb broad who didn't use her turn signal and almost hit her), Danielle made it to the tiny strip mall on Kedzie.
She walked to the first store on the left Dunkin Donuts/Baskin Robins. She knew that this was the hour that the fresh donuts came out and she couldn't wait for the warm fresh out of the oven pastry. That's when she noticed something on the Baskin Robins part of the shop. An ice cream donut. Her mouth watered at the sight of the chocolate dough with pumpkin cheesecake ice cream in the center. The donut its self reminded her of her big sister Mini Maril, who is more beautiful then the perfect donut. She had a mile wide smile as she bought the last one and walked down the street towards the busy road.
All of the sudden she felt someone push her and to stop herself from falling into the street and being killed she had to let go of the donut to grab onto the parked car next to her. When she finally stood up straight again with the fear of getting run over out aside Danielle glanced up just in time to see a blood red pick up truck run over the donut.
As she stood there for a minute as the afternoon traffic ran over her beloved perfect donut the shock slowly faded away. However it was replaced with grief almost immediately. She fell to her knees as the tears fell from her eyes and sobs escaped her mouth. She knew people were staring and they probably thought that she lost a loved one. But she didn't care because she did. That donut was more than just an average donut. It was perfect. It also reminded her of Maril so it was like seeing her murder. And it was Danielle's fault. And the sobs wracked her body the person who pushed her just slowly lifted up the grief stricken girl and started walking her home. It was her brother. She wanted to hate him. She wanted to hate him so much. To never forgive him for what he made her do. But she couldn't hate one sibling after losing another. It would be too much.
When they finally got home Danielle couldn't even produce more tears so she just sat in the corner of her room. Silent. She ate and she went to class like usual so mother didn't worry but she wasn't the same. She wasn't loud; she didn't constantly talk about unicorns and food; she wasn't ranting about how this one TV said this fact wrong or how this one thing should've been there to be accurate. She just sat in her corner, thinking about the accident. Thinking about everything she lost. And how maybe if just changed one finger thing. Then she would still have her donut. And she wouldn't have killed Maril.
