"This is your lunch, okay?" My mom said to happily.

"Now, I put a dollar in there so you can buy some cake!" My dad said calmingly.

"You can ask one of the big kids how you do that." My mom joked.

"Remember to call me once you get your schedule!" She chimed as I left to get the bus.

"Okay, you ready?" my dad asked.

"I think so?" I questioned myself, was I really ready to start school all over again in a different country?

I guess it's natural for parents to cry
on their kid's first day of school.

I'm and until today, I was home-schooled.

I know what you're thinking.
"Home-schooled kids are freaks."
Or that we're weirdly religious or something.

But my family's totally normal.
Except for the fact that both my
parents are research zoologists
and we've spent the last
12 years in Africa.
I had a great life.
But then my mom got offered tenure at Northwestern University.

So it was goodbye Africa
and hello high school.

I walked into the class room and began to find a seat

"Hi,I don't know if anyone told you about me. I'm a new student here. My name is Luke Hemmings." I said eagerly to the boy sitting at the table.

"Talk to me again and I'll kick your ass" He replied.

"wow, okay then" Michigan seemed wayyy different than Africa. Then again my only friends were elephants.

I moved on.

"You don't wanna sit there. Rachel Dillons boyfriend is gonna sit there."

I then moved on again, I was now standing directly in front of my classmates.

"Hey, everybody!" My teacher yelled, causing me to jump backwards bashing into her.

"Oh shit, I mean crap, I'm so sorry" I rushed.

"Oh sweetie, its not you its bad luck!" She replied.

The middle aged women began to wipe up coffee from her bright red jumper, she then lifted it off completely, including her shirt underneath. When things couldn't get any worse a short, male teacher approached her.

"Um.. Ms. Norbury?..." He began to say before being interrupted.

"UGH! My is my shirt stuck to my jumper again?" She sighed, man today wasn't the greatest of days for her I guess.

"Yes" He chuckled.

"Fabulous" She sarcastically muttered back to him.

"Well, I just wanted to let everybody know that we have a new student joining us today!" She almost forgot everything bad, awkward and awful that just happened and carried on as normal.

"He just moved here, all the way from Africa! Welcome" She chimed as she pushed me forward to the class. Great.

"His name is Lucas... Lucas Hemmings" She welcomed me yet again.

"Thats me!" I said louder than expected.

"I like to be called Luke though. Just a heads up!" I said as I began to take my seat.
