"Grief is like the ocean;
it comes on waves ebbing and flowing.
Sometimes the water is calm,
and sometimes it is overwhelming.
All we can do is learn to swim."
~ Vicki Harrison
- Prologue -
THE NIGHT AIR was chilly on her bare arms and she shivered involuntarily, sucking in a breath and letting it out slowly; the vapor immediately condensed in the air in front of her. Elora pulled nervously at the hem of her lose white shirt that was partly tucked into her high waisted jeans. The young woman's eyes were fixated on something that was lying on the grass-covered grounds rather than the dark green blur of a forest in the distance.
The creaking sound of a door being opened reached her ears. However, the action did not take her attention away and she did not look behind her to see who opened it. Her eyes were still fixated on the same spot: eyes cold and empty. The shrill light coming from inside, illuminated a silhouette of a man. He strolled out of the mansion, walked down the wooden steps of the porch and appeared to be heading over to her. Heavy footsteps faded into the darkness while the person came to a halt beside her.
She heard him take a deep breath as if he was preparing himself for something.
"They say they know how it happened."
She did not look at him nor did she say something; she did not acknowledge him at all. Instead she kept staring, her fingers clutching the soft material of her shirt even tighter. The chirps of crickets broke their time of noiselessness.
"They said..." He turned to look at his younger sister and sighed once. "They said she took her own life. She committed suicide, Ella."
