I opened my eyes, and found myself, not laying in the bed that had been so kindly prepared, but in a wasteland of white fog and trees. I began to panic. What had happened to Frank and Barbara? Where was I? Did I put them in danger? My thoughts full of guilt, I was about to start moving, when I heard a voice.
"Clair." It whispered. "Clair." Curious, I walked towards the source of the sound. There, surrounded by the white fog, was a young-looking woman. "Clair, I can help you." She whispered. One thing I noticed, was that her mouth didn't move when she spoke. Her voice also had an echo to it, as if she was standing miles away, but, she was right here.
"Ok. So help me." I responded sarcastically. "Take me back to Frank and Barbara or take me to Mt. Greylock instead."
"I can't do that." She whispered sadly. "And you'll find that you haven't gone anywhere, for this is but a dream." She retorted.
"Oh so I can ignore everything you say? It is a dream after all. It's not real." I replied.
"This may be a dream, but you know, deep down, that I can help you. You only need to let me." I whispered a single word in response.
"Ok"
The world around me shifted, and we found ourselves in the middle of the forest. She went over to a nearby tree and plucked off some branches. The world spun once again, and I found myself on achingly familiar terrain. I could recognize the bogs and hills of Scotland, even in my sleep. Together, we walked towards one of the lochs. We reached the lakes edge, but before I could ask her what came next? The water burst apart, only to reform in the shape of a horse.
"A kelpie." She whispered. "This will be your wand core" she said as she plucked a single hair from the kelpies mane. The kelpie disappeared without a complaint and I couldn't see him again. Suddenly, the girl started to sing. As she sang, the wood and the kelpie hair in her hand, formed into the familiar shape of what I know now to be a wand.
"Kelpie hair. Rosewood. " The name brought back memories of playing chess with my father. We had the most beautiful chess set, made of polished rosewood. It had to be our most valuable possession, and all of us knew how to play chess. The girl however, wasn't done.
"11 and a half inches. Slightly springy." She finished. Then she turned to me. "This is your wand" she whispered with finality. "In the times coming ahead, you will need it. When you reach the school, simply show them the bottom of the wand, and they will understand."
"Understand what? How do I use this?" All my questions went unanswered as I felt the world swirl around me, and I woke up in Frank and Barbara's house, clutching the beautiful wand made of Rosewood and Kelpie hair. My wand.
