Alright, I'm a lazy bastard so I'm just reusing all of my English homework and pretending I wrote these for Wattpad, sue me. Please pretend I am not a lazy procrastinator and enjoy this speech.
Please no hate, I don't really care about your opinion, you can have it that's cool but please don't start an aggressive yes or no war in the comments. Thanks bye.
There is a war in Syria, a big confusing war with several groups fighting against each other for control. Because of this war people have been forced to flee their homes or face certain death. We have a choice to make, whether we should open up our country and give them refuge or leave them stranded. I believe we should let them in. I know some of you may be fearful of the risks but as responsible human being we must all understand that we cannot obliterate risk, only manage it. I believe that for the little risk refugees pose and the great rewards the bring such as their culture, their food and their sport refugees are worth it. They are worth it.
Refugees are fleeing war we should help them. When you are born is luck, it is a lottery of life if you are born in a rich family in a good neighbourhood or a family living in poverty surrounded by death, famine and war. It is not these refugees fault they are fleeing war, so why are we punishing them for it. Why do we constantly become fearful of a big new threat, what is with the ongoing fear-mongering, the only time and group of refugees or immigrants has ever nearly wiped out a civilisation is when the British decided to colonialize a new country. Why should we punish someone for wanting to be safe? Ipek Ipekciouglu a daughter of a refugee who now lives in Germany, "I feel Turkish and German and a human being and a lesbian." As she explained we are all human, no matter our heritage, our culture, our race, our sexuality or our gender. So why treat each other like we aren't. Humans are worth it.
There are huge benefits to allowing refugees to live in Australia. For example, residents of Nhill, a small country town in Victoria where a lot of refugees were placed couldn't say enough good things about the refugees who would do menial tasks like fruit picking that other residents would not. There are so many sources who say that an influx of migrants and refugees would be good for the economy. For example; the Washington Post said "an influx of lower-wage migrants into a community usually raises wages for everyone else," The New York Times said "Immigration benefited local population in 19 of the 20 industrialized countries we studied." A town like Broken Hill, who's population is half it once was and consists mostly of retirees would benefit greatly from an influx of refugees who could work at the new shopping centres, a farm or a solar farm. Refugees are not a burden economically so why treat them like they are? Economically, they are worth it.
I hope some of you who were against refugees have changed your minds but there is still a major concern that needs to be dealt with. A lot of people use the argument that we are "full", that we have no space for more people [show choropleth of Australia] Each dot represents 1000 people, we are the 6th largest country, we are not full. Keeping Refugees in off-shore detention centres is costing us so much money, if we resettled them we would make that money and more back in taxes. One way we could resettle refugees is to fund a program that Australia has been running since 2013 which allows private citizens to house refugees until they can get a job and afford their own home. The only problem with this problem is that it does not have sufficient funding or awareness to work as well as it should. Another way you could resettle refugees is to fund scholarships for those who wish to return home when the war is over because it would help the economy of a post war country. A lot of these refugees are great people trying to find a way to stay alive and some people wish to ban them from ever returning to Australia. Do people not realise that only a miniscule amount of people would be here if no one was allowed to immigrate. These refugees need our help and you wish to treat them as if they are all criminals. These refugees are worth it.
In the past we have been terrified of immigrants but they have brought us no harm and only amazing things like soccer and dumplings. If you do not want to allow refugees to seek safety in Australia for the selfless reason that they are just scared people fleeing war then do it for the selfish reason, history will not look back at you kindly for choosing to ban people who need our help from ever returning. There will not be a statue with your name on it saying "He sent people back into a war zone because he was scared." Refugees are usually amazing people with amazing foods and cultures they wish to share, aren't these things, these people worth it?

Zeals
General FictionZeals are short pieces of literature or art left in oragami form in public spaces. I have joined a school club where each week we meet and write and create zeals. Hopefully I will publish at least one zeal a week. Btw I could be spelling Zeal wrong...
